About Akira

"My students have all the potential to achieve their best in Math and Science, and I am there to unleash it."
"I guarantee a full refund if students do no understand what I teach by the end of the session"

What do I tutor?
I specialized in helping students in preparing for their High School Regents, SAT, SAT Subject Tests, ACT and AP in Mathematics and Science. My Math tutor service includes Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, Pre-Calculus and Calculus. My Science tutor service includes Living Environment, Biology (E/M), Chemistry, and Physics. Furthermore, I am open to tutoring younger kids from Grade 1 to Grade 8 in fueling their passion for Math and Science.

I am currently pursuing my Master in Science Education at Columbia University Teachers College to further complement my tutoring skills in Science and Math. I am also a part time tutor for SAT Math at excelacademy in long island and volunteer as a high school STEM tutor at streetsquash in Harlem. I previously worked for Columbia University Medical Center as a Lab Manager assisting biological research on Stem Cell and human organ development.

How do I tutor?
My lesson usually emphasizes on learning through hands on practice, listening and writing. I will first discuss with the parents/students through text and WyzAnt message to get a general sense of the student's current ability and knowledge, and their expectation from me as a tutor. Based on the student's current level of understanding, I tailor my tutor session for the student before the lesson starts.

During the lesson, I use a lot of live visual material to complement my explanation on my Surface Book Tablet. I encourage my students to draw and write with me to experience the fun in solving difficult questions and understanding complex concepts. I have the uncanny capability to explain difficult concepts in very layman term while making the material fun and engaging. Students are welcome to ask all kinds of questions to help understand the concepts as I am very patient in tutoring my students.

After the lesson, students will receive a PDF copy or a screencast of our work through email for further revision. Students are free to contact me via email and text if they have minor questions on their homework, and I am more than happy to help out. Extra homework with more challenging questions can be provided if students feel comfortable in completing their school homework.

Why you should choose me as your/your kids' tutor?
On average, students score B+ and above, with some of my students achieved a staggering 200% improvement after taking classes with me. I had perfect scores in SAT Math, SAT II Math 1 and Math 2, and extensive experience in teaching students to score in their exams. I am familiar with both international and American K12 education system, thus able to provide fresh, interesting, and effective learning skills in Maths and Science. I am perfectly fluent in English and Chinese. I am also experienced in teaching and handling kids of younger ages, from elementary to high school.

One last thing... ...
I am super organized, caring, and witty. Currently I am base at downtown Manhattan near Tribeca and uptown Manhattan around Columbia University. Please contact me if my description above fits what you are looking for.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Very knowledgeable and patient tutor — Akira was a real life saver when it came to helping my daughter understand her Algebra 2 / Trig problems, in particular logarithms. She was completely behind in her understanding and grasping the concepts of how to solve logs. His lessons are incredibly organized and he has helped my daughter organize her problem solving skills, in addition to building her confidence. He is very knowledgeable in ...
