About Lynne

I have been a Visiting Professor at the full professor level at universities in USA and in Europe; however, I enjoy just as much working with younger students, coaching them above all in creative writing, but also in basic writing skills. My students sometimes go on to publish their work. At times I deal with ironing out personal issues that can block or hinder advancement in school. What I like to share, if the occasion permits, is my experiences living in Italy, France, and Switzerland. I am not speaking merely of knowledge of languages, which I do have. (I love to help people with Italian and French!) In recent years I have had many interns working with me directly; their testimony to what they have learned is precious to me. As author of several books on art, I can be very helpful in focusing young or older persons on (a) the history of art and (b) applied arts such as painting, sculpture, photography.

I was born in Ohio, graduated from an Ivy League college, had several fellowships abroad, then returned to earn my PhD from Columbia University in comparative literature. I published several collections of poetry, as well as translations of poetry and prose. I've lectured widely at prestigious institutions, including museums, and feel that I have a special and immediate relation to audiences, something that helps me greatly when I teach and tutor. I always feel I have as much to learn from students and interns as they do from me.

Having enjoyed three Fulbright grants abroad and being a naturally gregarious and open person, I have come into full and deep contact with cultures other than my own over a long period of time. I am a "language person" with even some philological background. At the same time, as a writer, I'm alive to the current usage of English. I have developed my own techniques to teach English to foreign-language students, sensitive to their needs and individual approaches.

I am trilingual with English, Italian, and French. I lived in Europe for more than 20 years. I also know Spanish and German. In my literary studies I learned Old Proven├žal which is much like modern Catalan. I have considerable experience teaching Italian and French. I have published many translations from Italian and French in literary journals, anthologies; two books of mine (Italian poetry, Italian prose) have been published by Farrar Straus and Giroux and other houses.

I would love to teach you what I know! I promise to help improve your command of English and other languages and will also introduce you to literature in English and other languages according to your skill level. I bring my own excitement and enthusiasm to the lessons. While gentle in my approach, I will encourage you to work to the maximum of your abilities. Once I start with someone, I take pride in watching him or her take necessary steps to improve style, grammar, expressivity--in short to reach goals, one step at a time. I'm also keen to teach art and art history, if desired.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

It might interest you to know that I have taught at the full-professor level at top universities. I have published many books of poetry and prose. I also lived in Europe 20 years, so am used to other cultures.

Writing

I have years of experience tutoring in creative writing, as well as in general essay-writing. I have been a visiting full professor at universities (UCLA, UNC Chapel Hill, etc.) teaching literature and writing, and I have given seminars on writing and translation at Columbia U., from which I hold a PhD. Among my published books are two volumes of poetry (Atlantic Monthly Press, Harper Collins), and there are also books of prose. My interests are very wide, and I easily follow the passions and curiosities of the student at hand. I have traveled a great deal and lived in Europe, so I also understand persons from different lands and different cultures, if that knowledge needs to be called upon. I have a very personable approach.
