Middlebury College (Film and Media)
I am a 23 year old recent college graduate of Middlebury College, in Middlebury, Vermont, with two years of leading international trips for middle and high school students through Overland Summers, and one year of experience as a kindergarten teacher. I have extensive experience traveling abroad, specifically in Spanish speaking countries, where I honed my skills for the Spanish language. In my work as a trip leader/camp counselor and as a kindergarten teacher, I have forged meaningful relationships with campers and students. I love working with children and serving not only as a mentor or teacher, but as a fun and dependable friend.
The promise of creating a fun and trusting relationship with the students I tutor, combined with my extensive knowledge of Spanish and other academic subjects and my experience this past year as a teacher makes me a reliable choice as a tutor. I love the flexibility tutoring gives to focus on specific subject areas that students love or are challenged by, as well as the potential to create a more personal relationship. I'd like to think I'm still close enough in age to the students I tutor that I'm not an intimidating teacher figure, but more of a friend/mentor with just a few more years of school behind me.
In my tutoring this past year, I have been called to focus on Algebra I, a class I thought I'd left behind in high school! However, revisiting this subject reminded me how much I this subject made and continues to make sense to me. The student I was working with and I came up with a fast facts sheet to help him study the concepts with ease, which led to a grade increase.
Every semester of college, I took a Spanish class in order to improve my fluency and prepare me for my semester abroad, In the spring of 2013, I spent 5+ months studying abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina, living with an Argentine family, taking classes at the local university, and pledging not to speak English for the duration of my stay. I continued practicing Spanish after graduation by spending 6 weeks leading trips for students in both Costa Rica (summer 2014) and Spain (summer 2015). I have also spent the last two years tutoring middle school students in Spanish for the duration of their school years.
I took several public speaking workshops in college to prepare for an international event in which I had to give tours to thousands of people per day. I have successfully honed these skills and feel prepared to pass them on to students looking to improve their public speaking skills.
Separately, English was my strongest subject in school, and I took several writing intensive classes in school to master writing papers for a variety of college classes from film to history.
I studied film and media in my undergraduate pursuits, where the degree was a combination of hard skills in production, and a study of film and various storytelling elements. Many people consider Adobe or Final Cut skills to be not only useful but highly marketable, and look excellent in pursuing careers in the media industry. I would be happy to teach students in these hard skills, or discuss how to make movies successfully from the initial creative processes as well!
I would love to meet in person and prove that I can be helpful with your schoolwork! Please contact me for availability, rates, and any other questions you may have! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
