About Astrid

Astrid is an experienced teacher and performer. She has taught beginner and advanced-level students ages 3 to 92 in private and group lessons. Her lessons incorporate jazz, pop, and rock genres with an emphasis on singing techniques, rhythm skills, theory, ear training, musicianship, and stage presence. Her advanced lessons include the use of looping and live electronics.
"Teaching students of all levels, talent, and ages, I’ve come to the conclusion that whoever has that urge to participate in the music making process, either as a performer, composer or an active listener, can enjoy creatively expressing themselves through making music. The word “playing” in English suggests a game, and learning music should be a fun, enjoyable experience. In private lessons I concentrate on technical abilities and the personal emotional connection to music with the same intensity."

Voice - Master of Music at Manhattan School of Music for Jazz Performance, studied with Theo Bleckmann, Kate McGarry, Gretchen Parlato, Carla Marcotulli. Somatic LoVetri method workshop.

Ear Training / Sight Singing / Music Theory - studied in depth as a part of curriculum but as a vocal teacher emphasis is on developing hearing in oder to reproduce with singing combined with excessive workout for relative pitch.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

I graduated from Manhattan School of Music, Master of Music degree in Jazz Performance, 2015.
As a part of the curriculum, ear training was a prerequisite to start the Master's program which I successfully fulfilled. I've been teaching ear training for private students for more than 10 years, from beginners to students who are preparing for audition for conservatories.

General Music

I have earned Master of Music degree in Jazz Performance, and my instrument was voice. I attended one of the most prestige schools in the world, Manhattan School of Music, and studied with some of the most in demand vocal jazz teachers such as Theo Bleckmann, Gretchen Parlato and Kate McGarry.
As a part of the curriculum, ear training, music theory, sight singing and song writing were subject we worked on a high level, I am very confident I can teach it on the high level too.

Music Production

While studying at Manhattan School of Music for my Master in Music jazz vocal performance degree, I concentrated on production of music in Ableton Live program. I studied with Theo Bleckmann and Todd Reynolds who are one of the pioneers of using electronics in their concerts. Music production lessons that I teach focus on the performance techniques like looping and using effects to process live sound.

Sight Singing

Good sight singing skills are nowadays mandatory for musicians. While I was obtaining my Master of Music degree in Jazz Performance at the Manhattan School of Music I was challenged as a singer without a perfect pitch to read atonal music on spot, the kind of music that I was not accustomed to. I developed a method of relying more on relative pitch in connection to harmony together with strong interval singing in order to be able to read complex music. I've since been teaching it to other singers with a good results.

Songwriting

Songwriting has been one of my passions in music, and I have songs published both in English and Croatian. I've won an award for best song on Chansonfest 2012, Croatia. While pursuing my Master in Music degree at Manhattan School of Music, composition and songwriting combined with arranging took a big part of the curriculum I've been teaching it since in private lessons.

Voice (Music)

With the Master of Music degree in vocal jazz performance from Manhattan School of Music, I've expanded my teaching methods to be able to help students on the highest levels.
I studied under amazing singers such as Theo Bleckmann, Kate McGarry and Gretchen Parlato.
In order to enhance my knowledge I took the Somatic Lo Vetri Method workshop that all my teachers above are certified in. I have been teaching students of all levels and ages in lessons and classes through schools and private studio for more than 10 years.
