About Gregory

I am currently earning my Master's degree of Music in Composition at Mannes College The New School for Music. I completed my Bachelor's degree of Music with a double emphasis in Viola Performance and Composition at University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) graduating with High Honors and Distinction in my Major. At UCSB, I studied Viola Performance with Professor Helen Callus and Composition with Professors Joel Feigin and Jeremy Haladyna.

To fund my undergraduate education I worked full-time during the summers as a camp counselor and part-time during the school year as a music teacher. Teaching children during the summers and adults (college-age) students during the academic year, I learned it is important to adjust my plans to meet the various needs of my students. It is very gratifying for me to see my students achieve their goals and enjoy the experience, whether he or she is a child learning the violin, an engineer learning piano, or a music major tackling upper division theory classes. There's always a way in and it is my job as a teacher to find it.

I have earned awards and honors including UCSB’s Music Affiliates four-year special enhanced “Excellence at Audition” scholarship, Sherrill C. Corwin Metropolitan Theatre Awards for Large Ensemble and for Solo/Chamber, selection as the concerto competition winner at YPSO, winner at the Junior Bach Festival, winner of the Marin Music Chest Senior Division Scholarship, winner of the Mabel Pittenger Award for Excellence in Classical Music Performance, and winner of the THUMB Original Composition Award.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I am currently earning my Masters in Music Composition at Mannes College the New School for Music. Last year I graduated from University of California, Santa Barbara with a Bachelor of Music with a double emphasis in Viola Performance and Composition. I graduated with "High Honors" (i.e. GPA 3.78) and Distinction in my Major.

Ear Training

I am currently earning my Masters in Music Composition at Mannes College the New School for Music. Last year I graduated from University of California, Santa Barbara with a Bachelor of Music with a double emphasis in Viola Performance and Composition. I graduated with "High Honors" (i.e. GPA 3.78) and Distinction in my Major.

Both institutions require intensive ear training as part of their curriculums. As a string player since I was three-years-old, I developed my ear from an early age. As a result, I was able to test out of classes at both UCSB and Mannes.

Music History

At UCSB the Bachelor of Music program requires completion of five quarters of music history classes. As part of the audition process for the Masters in Music degree at Mannes, I proved my knowledge during placement exams. I required no further music history coursework as a graduate student.

Violin

I have been playing the violin since I was three-years-old and the viola since I was nine. In addition to earning a degree in viola performance, I have won numerous awards and continue to perform in gigs and as a volunteer. I am also a substitute violin and viola teacher at The Harmony Program in New York.
