University of Miami (Music Industry Jazz)
Remember the music teacher who gave you boring exercises and made you want to quit your instrument? I'm not him. I've been playing saxophone for over twenty years, and am versed in all styles of music. Jazz, pop, rock, bossa-nova, hip-hop -- it doesn't matter what you like. You'll learn how to play by ear from recordings without driving yourself crazy. I'll teach you the elements of rhythm, reading music, and harmony. If we meet at your home and you have a piano, I'll show you the fundamentals of chords on the keyboard.
I have a B.M. from the University of Miami School of Music, and I play saxophone and basic jazz piano. I have played in an off-Broadway show and have taught private lessons to students of all ages.
Look, learning how to play an instrument takes hard work. You really are your own teacher. I'll give you the tools to make the process more enjoyable. My place or yours. I live in Jersey but am in New York City frequently, so I'm able to teach in Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a jazz improviser, I have honed my ears to hear the melodies and chords of tunes and play them instantly. I have an advanced understanding of jazz piano that allows me to teach ear training in a methodical and simple way. My music library is extensive, and I am able to identify many instrumental artists within seconds of hearing them.
Music history was a major part of my degree at the University of Miami. We studied jazz history from early 1900's to the present. I also learned about classical music history from Gregorian chants, through baroque, and up to twentieth century composers.
I took salsa dancing lessons for three years in NYC. Some of the schools I studied at include Dancesport, Melanie Torres, and Dance Manhattan. Since I'm a musician, I have a thorough understanding of the rhythm and clave. I am able to teach beginning students the basic step on 1 or 2, and basic turn patters.
I have been playing the saxophone since I was 10. I majored in music at the University of Miami in Florida, which has one of the best jazz programs in the world. I've taught private students of all ages, been mentored by David Liebman (saxophonist with Miles Davis), and played an off-Broadway show in New York City.
My teaching is about showing the student how to learn and memorize music by ear. I also teach them sight reading, and give them a solid foundation in chords and music theory that will allow them to learn popular songs. These are skills that will qualify them to play professionally, if they desire.
