Greetings to all potential history students! Teaching has always been a natural and rewarding experience for me and I believe all students can improve and enjoy this subject area. Trained as an American historian, I have taught a variety of specialized classes in this field, primarily at universities in the New York area. In addition, I taught European and Global History courses. After years of teaching, I decided to pursue other personal and professional interests. One field I explored was appraisal studies which tapped into my lifelong interest in collecting and studying objects or artifacts. It builds on a strong personal orientation toward visual and tactile representations (further enhanced by my role as a parent) that help students make stronger connections with the past. Using a variety of teaching tools you can make history resonate for the next generation.
I also think an overemphasis on learning all the "facts" can be overwhelming to students. As a teacher you need to highlight important figures and events, but students need to identify themes and movements that shape historical change. At this point, I want to work with younger students and have already tutored my niece, a high school AP student. Social studies is still a subject that teenagers can find a little "boring," but with the right teacher and it can be interesting and fun. I have always been drawn to the art of storytelling and finding ways to connect the past and present.

My area of specialization as a professor was 19th and 20th century American history. I regularly taught both sections of the introductory survey course. In addition, I conducted scholarly research from the 1920s through World War II.
