About Tugrulbey

Thank you for reading my bio. Over the years, I have acquired the ability of explaining technical and social topics to a child or an adult. Two of the items needed for such a task are the understanding of the essence of the topic, and the awareness of how the student views the world. Then the subject can be explained by using proper analogies and language that the student is familiar with. Teaching is a communication process, and human communication is highly symbolic. For example, “toothache” and “heartache” are similar in syntax, however, they are different considerably in meaning. Therefore, it is of great importance for the teacher to ascertain that the concepts of the lesson have been transferred successfully to the mind of the student. Mere repetition and memorization of terminology and formulae does not mean comprehension. As attributed to the well-known physicist Albert Einstein: “Any fool can know; the point is to understand.”

Having started tutoring while attending high school, I love teaching a variety of topics I know to students of different age levels. Having taught as an official tutor, teaching assistant, or a mentor at some of the well-known U.S. universities (City University of New York, The University of Virginia, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stevens Institute of Technology), I have private tutoring experience as well. The subject I have taught most often is mathematics, from elementary school to college level (up to and including differential equations and statistics), however, I have taught also other subjects from physics to graphics design.

I can assist in preparing for standard tests such as SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, MCAT, ISEE, SSAT, SHSAT, and Regents.

I have been highly trained in both technical and social sciences: I have been given a Master of Science degree from MIT in Nuclear Engineering, attended classes at the Sloan School of Management and the Harvard Business School, and received various national academic prizes and an SAT II Mathematics score of 800.

Another important area where I have helped my students is selective high school and college admissions. Many of my students have received admission with merit-based financial aid. Some of the schools that they been accepted to are Yale University, Northwestern University, Dartmouth College, Stevens Institute of Technology, Technische Universität Dresden, and Lycée Français Privé.

Throughout my tutoring career, I have had many students who achieved success. I would find it quite rewarding if I can help also you or your child(ren) achieve good success. Let me awaken the scientist in you or your child.

I am available on afternoons, evenings, and for homeschooled students, mornings. I am not available on weekends. Please provide cancellation notices 3 hours in advance.

Please feel free to contact me for more information. Wish you and/or your child(ren) good success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Arabic

Have been studying the language for several decades, including reading, writing, and speaking. I have been teaching basic Arabic for the last four years.

Bible Studies

Have been studying the subject for many years, including commentaries, different translations, and studying portions in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek.

Business

Attended courses at the Sloan School of Management as an MIT student, and also attended the Harvard Business School as a visiting graduate student. Started several businesses while at high school, and after graduating from college. I was in charge of U.S. sales and marketing of a product line for a global corporation. I have been teaching business basics for the last eight years.

Chemical Engineering

I worked on a variety of projects for many years as a research engineer at the Highly Filled Materials Institute, affiliated with the Chemical Engineering Department of the Stevens Institute of Technology. During this time, I have taught and trained many students at the Institute.

Civil Engineering

I took civil engineering courses at CUNY and MIT. I worked for civil engineering/construction companies as a technical consultant for structural design for buildings and retaining walls. I also worked on construction bids, inspections, and subcontractor management.

Computer Programming

Having learned the basics of programming from the ground up with machine code and processor architecture, I have taught the basics of computer science and programming to children, even of quite young age. I have been involved with scientific programming for many years. For the Laboratory of Electromagnetic and Electronic Systems at MIT, I wrote computer programs that simulate digitally control analog circuits. In the recent years, I have been working on the areas of supercomputing, parallel processing, and visualization of large data sets.

Cooking

I won an international cooking contest. I grew up with and am especially interested in Mediterranean Cuisine. I have started teaching cooking in the last ten years.

Electrical Engineering

I designed analog signal processing circuits while at MIT, and also as a research assistant at its Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, I did my thesis work on the digital control of analog circuits.

Finite Math

Finite mathematics cover mainly the topics of mathematics outside the area of calculus. I have been trained on the following finite mathematics topics, including graduate-level work in applied mathematics at MIT: set theory, systems of linear equations, linear algebra, matrix operations, linear programming, probability and statistics, logic, decision theory.

Turkish

I'm a native speaker and graduate of high school in Turkey. I have successfully taught the language to American students.

UNIX

I'm working currently as a part-time UNIX System Administrator at the Stevens Institute of Technology. I have been teaching other staff members basic UNIX procedures.
