About Katerina

I'm currently on a gap year after completing my Freshman year at Columbia University. This year, I'm volunteering at a hospital and working as a preschool teacher at Bright Horizons Family Solutions. I've always had a knack for explaining concepts to my friends and family that I find fascinating, from quantum physics to how the human body processes fats. Stemming from that, I got into the practice of illustrating difficult topics to my peers before a big Chemistry or Physics test, which aided my friends as well as solidified my understanding of the topics. I can make something crazy sounding like "calculating the mutual inductance of two wire coils" as easy to comprehend as addition. This is largely due to my experience as a preschool teacher as I practice simplifying concepts for others daily.

A different type of tutoring environment I thrive in is proofreading essays. Even though I'm on a break from college I love when my friends ask me to look over their papers because I have developed the essential skill of giving constructive feedback. I know how to manipulate one sentence until it is the best it can be, but also how to offer suggestions for future writing habits. I had an amazing literature and composition program at my high school and I love helping others become the best writer they can be.

From desperately needing a math tutor in 8th grade to acing advanced Calculus courses at an Ivy League school alone, I truly know what it means to develop math skills with the initial help of an awesome tutor. I've taken Calculus I and II in college so far, so I am confident in topics from Limits to Derivatives to Integration Techniques to Sequences and Series.

I've taken a high school level and two college level biochemistry courses as well as worked at a biotech startup for a summer. Biology has always been a passion of mine so I have taken at least three bio/physiology courses as well as intensely studied it on my own time. Chemistry has always come naturally to me, and I have taken the full sequence of Introduction to General Chemistry in college. I have often been told that I am excellent in explaining physics concepts; as an engineering major I have taken Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Electricity, Magnetism, and a bit of optics and waves. Furthermore, I often read books about these subjects because I adore them, and am incredibly willing to do more research if it would benefit my student. If presented with a question I cannot answer, I will tirelessly search for the perfect response!

I have SO much free time at convenient hours for you, since I only work until 5pm--so please do not hesitate to contact me as it is incredibly likely that I will have time for you! I will be here for as many hours as you need, especially if you have an exam coming up.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

I have taken a full sequence of General Chemistry at Columbia University as well as tutored my peers. I am majoring in Chemical engineering, so I am quite confident in the subject matter.
