Hunter College of The City University of New York (Religious Studies)
Hello! My name is Miriam and I am a native New Yorker! The combination of being a native English speaker from New York City, and being raised in a family of teachers, has contributed to why I love to teach. Another reason I enjoy what I do is that I love to discover new cultures. I have lived in Mexico, as well as in Israel, where I taught English, and also studied Hebrew in an intensive 5-month program. As a result, I understand what it is like to learn a new language in a new land and how exciting and scary that can be. I also know how important it is to learn a new language in order to live and succeed in a new country. My goal and strongest desire is to help others, especially with spoken English.
I have a strong background and over 15 years of experience working both in the corporate world and in non-profit organizations. My co-workers and managers have recognized me for my natural teaching abilities and compassion, most especially in speaking, writing and editing of letters, memos, and a variety of other business correspondence. And, my corporate experience has helped me to hone my skills in job searching. I therefore also specialize in resume and cover letter writing, as well as interview skills!
My undergraduate major was in Religious Studies, which has helped me have an even greater understanding and appreciation of different cultures. I graduated with a 3.7 grade point average because I am committed to excellence, and I am committed to your achievement as well! My greatest goal is to help motivate others so that they can help themselves, have greater confidence and be successful in their lives.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. I would be very happy to work with you along your path!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am TESOL certified (an accredited professional qualification awarded in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages).
Recently one of my professors told me that I have excellent grammar. I never thought about this before, however now I realize, with an extended family of teachers it was destined to be so! Grammar is so important in day-to-day life and in work life. Using this tool, I am committed to helping others become the best speakers and writers they can be.

Coming from a family of teachers with advanced degrees helped me strengthen my English skills from an early age. I still love to look words up in the dictionary to further enhance my own comprehension. A well rounded vocabulary is essential, and I feel strongly about helping others in their learning process.
Writing is a passion for me and because of this my writing skills are strong. I recently graduated from Hunter CUNY with a 3.71 GPA, and a BA in Religious Studies. This major is writing intensive, so I spent years writing papers and honing my skills. I am very prepared to help others in their writing challenges and look forward to the opportunity of doing so.
