About Alex

I am an undergraduate sophomore at Columbia majoring in applied physics. This field of study requires me to draw on my knowledge of math and also to keep an open mind for new concepts. One of my favorite aspects of this is getting comfortable with a new idea or technique. I love figuring out how to use what I already know to solve different kinds of problems, and I truly enjoy helping others do just that.

I often help my peers with their physics or calculus homework, giving hints to guide them to the best strategy. Formally, I tutored students in trigonometry at Stuyvesant High School when I attended there myself. On the other hand, I also have experience with younger children, as I currently volunteer to tutor elementary school children with their studies. The best part, for me, is watching a student successfully master a concept, no longer needing any help to solve problems relating to it. That is when I know our work has paid off.

I have to use math everyday in my economics, physics, and math classes. This keeps me in practice with everything I've learned in the subject, from algebra to differential equations, so I am ready to help anyone just learning the material.

Ever since I started learning physics, I've loved the field. Figuring out the best way to proceed with a problem has always been a pleasure. Furthermore, I find myself thinking very deeply about every concept I encounter, from wave resonance, to energy storage in electromagnetic fields. That way, I can give the best explanation to make sense of them.

I'm available to help with homework, prepare for a test, or just to get better acquainted with a particular area in math or physics. I can't wait to help with any of these endeavors!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I take many math classes currently, and repeatedly use skills from algebra 1.

Algebra 2

I took Algebra 2 in high school, receiving a 100 for both terms, and I use the concepts everyday as a physics major.

Calculus

I completed two semesters of calculus at Stuyvesant High School with a grade of 100 for both. I finished my last two semesters at Columbia with an A+. I can help practice problem solving techniques as well as with developing a more theoretical understanding of the concepts.

Physics

I take physics courses every semester at Columbia and have never received below an A. Further, I have much experience elucidating the concepts to my peers.

SAT Math

I scored an 800 on the Math SAT and use the material every day as a physics student.

Trigonometry

I use trigonometry every day in my physics classes.

Best tutor!

Exactly what I needed from out of the gate: challenged me to think critically about a problem, didn't spoon-feed me the answers, explained concepts clearly and concisely, spoke confidently about the material, AND was able to identify all of my weaknesses at an instantaneous velocity while accelerating in 2 dimensions! A+++ tutor! Engaging, right to the point, and simply knows his stuff! Awesome a
