About Dylan

Hi! I'm a biologist (a developmental geneticist, if you must know) working in a lab at Columbia University. I grew up in rural Nevada, and fell in love with science from an early age - I got every book on NASA, airplanes, archaeology, paleontology, chemistry I could get my hands on.

I studied Biology, Chemistry, and German (Ja, Ich kann auch Deutsch!) at the University of Nevada, Reno and at Universit├Ąt Heidelberg in Germany, where I settled into the field of basic science research in genetics and biochemistry. While there, I started working in a lab, and also started my teaching/tutoring career. I taught a few recitation sections for intro Biology classes, and tutored several students on the side.

After graduation I moved to New York to get my Ph.D. at Columbia University. I am now pursuing this goal (I'll soon be done, if things all work out!) in the lab, where I study the process of cell fate restriction during cellular differentiation.

I would love to chat about my project, why it's interesting, useful, and awesome! While pursuing my Ph.D. I have also had the chance to TA, teach, and tutor at Columbia and elsewhere. I've taught some after-school programs with the New York Academy of Sciences, as well as taught some lab and lecture courses for Columbia undergraduates. I long, however, to get back to one-on-one tutoring, as I feel it tends to more successfully impact the student positively. Let's make this happen!

Finally, I'd just like to reiterate: I really love science - I get paid to be curious about the natural world! But I also love sharing that enthusiasm with others. The world is endlessly interesting, complex, and beautiful. If I could impart that on you (or your child or student), I would consider that an astounding success. My favorite thing about teaching is the moment a student has an "ah-ha!" moment, suddenly grasping how something works and seeing their delight. I plan, in the future, of working in academia, performing basic genetic research while also teaching the next generation of scientists. Who knows, perhaps you (or your son or daughter) will follow the same exciting path I'm on!

Being a biologist, I consider myself exceptionally qualified to teach this branch of the sciences to all levels of students. In addition, I've also studied Chemistry and German extensively, and can be an effective tutor in this area. Lastly, I am more than comfortable as a general science and math tutor to middle and high school students.

I sincerely look forward to working together in the future. Please feel free to contact me, and we can talk about the specifics of what you're looking for and if I'm the best fit for you. I hope you will find me a thoughtful and open person, and able to adapt to any specific needs that you have. I'm looking forward to meeting you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biochemistry

I am currently a fifth-year Ph.D. student in Biological Sciences at Columbia University. I have taught and tutored biolchemistry here at Columbia and at my undergraduate university. While I don't have a degree in biochemistry (I have a bachelor's in biology), I use biochemical techniques routinely in the lab I currently work in (Hobert Lab).

Biology

I am currently a fifth-year Ph.D. student in Biological Sciences at Columbia University. I have taught and tutored biology here at Columbia and at my undergraduate university. I have a bachelor's degree in Biology with honors from the University of Nevada, Reno.

Genetics

I study developmental genetics at the Hobert Lab at Columbia University in a Biological Sciences Ph.D. program. I use the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans, a common laboratory genetic model organism. I am well versed in genetic theory, practice, and techniques.
