About Caroline

We all learn in different ways and sometimes we need a guide to help us reach our goals. Whether you are struggling in a subject or want to learn at a faster pace, I will help you get there. To make information relevant to you, I will create lessons that relate to your hobbies and life.

I have one-on-one experience tutoring children at-risk of dropping out of school as well as professionals who are re-learning a subject. I prefer to co-plan lessons and make them as interactive as possible. I have discovered that within the same subject, students understand some concepts quickly, and others require more explanation. We can go at different speeds – it all depends on you!

I have an undergraduate degree from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and a masters degree from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. My day job involves reading or conducting research and managing projects based on the evidence.

PSAT / SAT Test preparation: **Will tutor if the exam is at least a month away.** Lessons will focus on building your confidence in math (algebra, geometry, and functions) and English (grammar, spelling, reading / infographic comprehension, and essay comparison). In addition to mastering subjects that appear on the PSAT / SAT, we will also work on test-taking strategies.

Language proficiency will transform your life! It will give you so many opportunities to meet amazing people and discover new parts of the world. I have working-level fluency in both French and Chinese. All lessons will center around pronunciation, grammar, and common vocabulary as well as most useful phrases for you.

French: I studied in France for a year in high school and passed the French subject of France’s baccalauréat. Professionally, I interned at the French Embassy in college, worked with several Franco-African countries, and translated an extensive report from English to French. French is a gorgeous language that has its own rules. Once you learn them, everything will click.

Chinese: I grew up with mandarin and formally studied Chinese for 7 years. Cumulatively, I have lived in countries where Mandarin is the official language for 3.5 years. While the language may seem daunting, it can truly be mastered with patience and continuous effort.

If there is a serious emergency, please let me know as soon as possible; there is no penalty. Otherwise, 24 hours’ notice is required. Sessions are generally between 60 – 90 minutes. I can accommodate most schedules and age groups. I look forward to helping you reach your learning goals!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chinese

I grew up with mandarin and formally studied Chinese for 7 years; three years before college and the following courses in college: Intensive first level Chinese I & II, Intensive second level Chinese I & II, Third level Chinese I, and Modern Chinese Drama. I studied Advance Chinese reading and speaking in Nanjing China for a semester and received a 'good' on Georgetown University's Chinese oral proficiency exam. I tutored Chinese for a year at the Senate Page School. Cumulatively, I have lived in countries where Mandarin is the official language for 3.5 years.
