About Joseph

Thanks for reading my profile and considering me for your tutor! I am an experienced math tutor newly moved to the White Plains area, but I work in the Financial District. I recently completed my Bachelor of Arts in computer science and my Bachelor of Science in mathematics from the University of Dallas with a 3.95 in-major GPA. I believe that most students already possess the intelligence needed to succeed in academics, and that some students simply need a teacher who is able to devote extra time and energy to addressing the individual needs of the student. Look no further—I am that teacher!

My specialties are in all types of math—from pre-algebra to differential equations—and test preparation. I earned a 36 on the ACT math section, a perfect 800 on the SAT math, and a perfect 170 on the GRE quantitative portion, along with exceptional composite scores on all three tests, and I'm prepared to share my test-taking skills with my students. Additionally, I have a good deal of experience writing code in a variety of languages, often for modeling in various other scientific fields.

I have experience teaching students as young as 9 and as old as 30. I currently tutor for the University of Dallas Math Department, where I help my college-aged peers through their math classes. I have also privately tutored 20+ students around the DFW area, many of whom I've been helping for two or more years. I spent a summer designing and teaching a robotics program at Rex Programming, where I learned valuable lessons about teaching younger children.

My students often tell me I have a natural skill for taking what a teacher taught in the classroom and interpreting it to be much more meaningful and understandable to the individual student. The one-on-one nature of tutoring allows me to assess where a student is having difficulty and to curate a lesson plan specific to the needs of the student. Tutoring sessions with me include a brief assessment to pinpoint the source of the difficulty, a reintroduction to the concepts that are causing the difficulty, and then a series of specially-selected math problems to work out while I'm there to assist. I also assign optional homework, which I believe is key to bringing the topic home: I give the student a handful of problems, and I suggest that each day, the student work through 1) a problem they've already done, and 2) one of the new problems I've assigned. This way, the student develops familiarity with the process, and then attempts to apply that process to an unfamiliar math problem, thus increasing general aptitude.

I'm also available for students who just need some extra guided practice to turn that B into an A!

My schedule is pretty flexible—afternoons and evenings are generally good, and weekends are also very good. I have a 12-hour cancellation policy, though I kindly ask that you inform me as soon as you know you won't be able to make it.

Thanks for considering me! Academic success IS attainable for ANYONE. I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Actuarial Science

As part of my education, I've taken courses in probability and finance. Additionally, I have sat for and passed SOA Exam 1/P (in November 2014) and Exam 2/FM (August 2016). I don't have experience with the other exams, but I will, as I am pursuing a designation with the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS). I am currently studying to take MFE in November.
