About Mary

Music is not only my passion and my outlet for creativity, but it is also my medium for helping others learn and grow in their creativity and self expression.
Currently, I teach fourth grade in Harlem, and I spend my free time working on piano performance pieces and tutoring others in ear training, music theory, piano lessons, and saxophone lessons. As I always want to learn and grow myself, I'm working toward mastering the ukulele as a new instrument in my repertoire.
At NYU, I studied music education and took lessons and flute and voice. I have also taught music at an elementary charter school in Queens and a public high school in the Bronx.
While I have taught in larger classroom settings, tutoring one-on-one is one of my favorite types of teaching. The amount of growth that I can witness right before my eyes in each student is remarkable, and the type of relationship building that can happen in these cases incomparable!

Sometimes it is difficult to find an arts teacher who has a genuine, burning passion for teaching and learning. Often, music and arts teachers are brilliant artists, but it's that love of teaching that really matters. My experience, my talent in a wide range of musical instruments and subjects, and my overall love for teaching make me a quality tutor.

If you are looking for a passionate, loving teacher to help you develop your skills as a musician on a particular instrument, or if you are looking for tutoring in music history, music theory, sight singing, or aural skills, please contact me to schedule a lesson!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
