I have a unique set of experience both working and teaching in the art world. I've worked at Art Basel Hong Kong 2015 and most recently at Kaikai Kiki here in NYC, and I have many years of experience teaching drawing and painting to students as a private business owner in Beijing. My academic background includes silkscreen and various exhibitions at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA--the best art school in China), and most recently a Master's in Fine Arts from the University of Washington in Seattle. During this time, I've picked up a wide variety of techniques, taught a painting and drawing class at the university level as well, explored the worlds of art history and art theory, and broadened my own set of work as an independent artist. I'd love to share all this experience with you too!
I enjoy teaching students with an interest in art, regardless of their desired field or technique. I'm very easy to get along with and love teaching students about the art world itself in addition to showing them techniques. I'm well-versed in common teaching methods used for art here in the US in addition to those through which I learned art myself, and can give students as much or as little of that as they'd like. I respond well to individual requests by interested students and will help each student reach their own unique goals. Thanks for taking the time to read this, and I'm looking forward to meeting you soon!
In addition to my years of private practice, I've learned the academic underpinnings of these subjects through my MFA at UW. I can provide each student with a unique blend of theory and practice that's catered to their own individual needs and goals.
I'm also a museum fanatic who finds new exhibits across the city all the time, so if you'd like me to give you a guided tour of specific exhibits with an explanation of the importance of this work for the history and trends of the world world in addition to interesting tidbits about the artists themselves, then I can definitely do that too! Art has been a long-term passion of mine since my early years, and I'd love to share that excitement with anyone. I have a unique set of experience both working and teaching in the art world. Highly Recommend! Summer was extremely knowledgeable and patient. I have absolutely no Mandarin skill so I was starting at zero. I was concerned that because of my level, it would be difficult to teach me. She asked me questions to find out how I learn/absorb information and then developed the session that best catered to me. It was great.
Summer was absolutely wonderful! We couldn't have asked for a better teacher.
Not only did she sit down with our daughter in an extremely patient manner, Summer helped her find her love of art again!
Our daughter is quite talented and was a bit discouraged this year with her art studies. To see the joy return to her face again while she was drawing and painting made us so happy.
We can't wait to use her again!
We are very happy to know her, she loves teaching, and showing stuffs to make class more enjoyable. EXCELLENT TEACHER.
My son had his first art lesson with Summer. He enjoyed it very much. Summer gave suggestions that are age-appropriate. I liked that she came prepared and also asked questions ahead of time so that the lesson was more individualized.
She is friendly, my daughter was immediately comfortable with Summer, we liked the fact that she came prepared with her supplies, my daughter loved it. We would recommend her to everyone.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
