About Claire

Art and French are two of my greatest passions. I began my studies in French when I turned eleven, and in photography when I started college. My greatest strength as a tutor is connecting academics to life outside of the classroom. When I was a student, I found that my coursework took on more meaning when I understood its broader context within the world. This is the type of knowledge that I plan to share with my own students.

I enjoy working with all ages and abilities. I am currently working with a young woman to improve her spoken French so she can conduct business abroad. In the past, I have also tutored young children, both in pre-school and elementary school. In college, I mentored a boy who is both blind and autistic. We met at his school every week from his time in the second through fourth grades. Working closely with his academic aides, we created unique tricks and strategies that helped him keep pace with the rest of his classmates.

I studied in France twice during college. Living abroad dramatically improved my language skills. I became a much more confident speaker, and developed a sense of spoken French outside of the classroom. My real passion for French comes through when I am speaking it. When tutoring, I try to cater to each student's unique learning style, and stay away from traditional classroom exercises. I find that students are better engaged with a language when they see how it is actually used. Repetition and worksheets build a structural linguistic understanding, but speaking the language makes a lasting impact.

I first studied photography in college. My studio coursework began in the darkroom with black and white 35 mm film. I then progressed to using medium format and color film. By graduation, I was working with a digital camera, and regularly used studio lighting and Adobe Photoshop. I have both an academic and a creative knowledge of the field. I am also well-versed in Adobe InDesign and Illustrator.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe InDesign

I have worked extensively with Adobe InDesign in varied professional contexts. In college, I worked in the Communications Office and regularly used InDesign to create Colby's admissions and events materials. As a marketing assistant at MdeAS Architects, I designed and edited the firm's promotional books and presentations using InDesign.

French

I received a Bachelor of Arts in French from Colby College in 2015 with a GPA of 3.6. I studied abroad in France twice during college, once in Dijon, and then in Paris. While in Paris, I studied at Reid Hall, with Columbia University, and at Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne.

Photography

I have a Bachelors degree in studio art with a concentration in photography. My coursework began in black and white film, developing images in a darkroom. I then moved to color film, followed by digital. I have extensive knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, studio lighting, and the history of photography.
