About Bruce

I have taught public school at various levels for a number of years. During that time, I have had state teacher certification in secondary English literature and composition; secondary, beginning and intermediate level Spanish instruction; and elementary special education. Additionally, I have instructed and tutored adult education literacy classes, as well as provided one-on-one tutoring to adults in English composition and creative writing.

Whether it's the study of English composition or literature, my qualifications for instructing those subjects are extensive. I hold a master's degree in Comparative Literature. I have held secondary English certification in literature and composition from three different public school districts.

I'm a personable, patient, and results-oriented educator. After discerning a student's academic goals, a comprehensive lesson plan is sketched out to attain a maximum level of proficiency. I tutor and welcome students from different backgrounds, ages, and all academic levels. From a small group to one-on-one tutoring, I'm an attentive teacher who enjoys teaching. Helping a student achieve his or her goals is a rewarding experience for me. Schedule a tutoring lesson with me that caters to your specific needs, and together we will explore what you or your child can learn and achieve.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Special Needs

Although most of my public school teaching has been in other subject areas, from August 1998, until June 2000 (two complete school terms), I was the primary teacher for an emotionally disturbed/behaviorally classroom at the William Kottmeyer Elementary School, part of the St. Louis Public Schools District. My students were young boys ranging in age from six to ten years-old. Although these special needs children were diagnosed with behavioral disorders, virtually every one of them - with varying degrees - had normal cognitive abilities. Thus, behavioral disordered, rather than learning disabled, children entails the bulk of my experience as a special education teacher.

In that capacity, I became very adept at writing and achieving Individual Education Program (IEP) goals. I designed age-appropriate learning tools, thematic units, and lesson plans specific to the individual needs of the student. The school district granted me two years of provisional certification in special education.

Very good tutor

I like the way Bruce has tutored my son. I feel that his approach of teaching analyzing literature and writing has helped my son to get better grades at school. He is very professional and patient. I would highly recommend him to anyone who needs an English tutor.
