About Jeffrey

As a lifelong scholar (author of more than 30 articles) and artist (films, acting, literature), I enjoy sharing my love of learning and my love of culture. I have been teaching at the collegiate level since 1990. It is my path in life.

As the author of more than 30 articles, and having edited an academic journal and a leading photography magazine (Aperture), I have the expertise to help you become more articulate and more knowledgeable of history, politics, and art.

My favorite thing about tutoring is helping the student to relax and to see the material from a new point of view. It's also fun to exchange information and to learn about what you are interested in.

I was the editor of an academic journal for five years and I was a contributing writer to a magazine on alternative culture for five years. In total, I've authored more than 30 articles on a wide range of topics.

Having taught political science and history at NYU and at Rutgers for many years, I have a sense of where your professors are coming from and what they are looking for. I've also published over 30 articles on a variety of topics in art history, on American culture, and on American politics, and as the former editor of an academic journal, I have a sense of a strong essay. Lastly, as a student who has won academic honors for graduate study in history, education, and political science, I know what it takes to be an ace student.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I have an MA in history from The New School and I've published many articles on American history - it's art history, its political history, and its social history.

Film

I have directed, written, and produced seven documentary films that have been screened in many film festivals coast-to-coast: DOC NYC 2011, Stranger Than Fiction 2012 (at the IFC theater), Boston Reelfest 2012, Berkeley Video and Film Festival, Brownfish Short Film Festival, etc. In addition, I have curated four film festivals and I had a residency for documentary film at Union Docs in Brooklyn in 2015.

Political Science

I am ABD in political science at The New School and I edited an academic journal (Constellations) that published articles on political affairs. I have also taught political science at Rutgers University for five years.

Public Speaking

As the former host of a series of successful public programs held over six years at the Wolfson Center for Public Affairs at The New School, as the former host of a podcast series, and as a professor who has been effectively communicating with classes as small as 5 and as large as 150 students for the past twenty years, I believe that I have the practical experience as a public speaker requisite to teach it to others. Please favorably consider my application to teach public speaking. Thank you.

World History

I have graduate degrees in history, political science, and education. In addition, I have published more than 30 articles, edited an academic journal (for 5 years), coordinated conferences on history at Yale, NYU, and at The New School.
