About Garrett

Over the years I've learned from many great teachers who have influenced how I help others learn. Great professors at Indiana University who taught me photo and broadcast journalism and more as an undergrad, and later those that taught me during my MBA studies. I applied those experiences when I managed 10-15 student photojournalists as their photo editor at the Indiana Daily Student, then one of only two paid circulation campus newspapers, where the standard was to guide people towards better work rather than doing it for them. The many photojournalists I've worked with covering events for the Associated Press or numerous newspapers that I've done assignments for have also been great teachers. This led me to work in Southeast Asia for two years on a project to teach my skills to advertising agency staff in Singapore and Vietnam.

My goal as a teacher is to give people the confidence to get the most out of technology. I can go deep into the nuts and bolts or gradually reveal just the right amount of information to get the immediate task accomplished. I'd rather you get familiar enough to do things on your own rather than have me sit at the keyboard and do it for you. My work helping people how to get more out of their cameras and computers complements my freelance work as a business developer, photographer, and video editor. Among my clients I've been helping older people new to technology, or overcoming physical obstacles, discover their inner computer geek.

I've been a Mac user and technician since they arrived on the market, shot film for 20 years before moving over to digital cameras, and worked in broadcast television and video production for many years too. I've also been working on a non-profit to encourage families to be more active in making photographs called 1 Life 1,000 Words, and working on other projects designed to position photography as a catalyst for building communities.

In hindsight I missed my calling as a teacher. Encouraging you to practice is how you'll grow as a photographer or graphic designer. I will tap into more than 20 years as a full-time photojournalist, or my experience in using computers for graphic design and publishing, to help you achieve your goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Desktop Publishing

Photography led me to get involved in the early stages of computer based publication and graphic design. From the first earliest Macs using PageMaker I've remained current in many of the Adobe design applications, and Quark XPress (which I still like better than InDesign). Worked as a publication coordinator and designer at Indiana University and art directed two local publications for many years. Still active in book publishing projects revolving around photography, and designing and maintaining online content management systems for websites.

Graphic Design

Photography led me to get involved in the early stages of computer based publication and graphic design. I'm well versed in many of the Adobe design applications, and have stayed current with Quark XPress (which I still like better than InDesign). Flirted briefly with an MFA in design but work as the publication coordinator and designer at Indiana University couldn't accommodate the time commitment. Spent two years advising media companies in Southeast Asia before returning to the US.

Macintosh

I've been using Macintosh computers since they had small black and white screens and everything had to fit on a single floppy disk. Apple Certified Developer in the mid-1990's. I have a few clients I currently teach how to use their computers.

Marketing

I have an MBA in Information Technology and Marketing from Indiana University and 8+ years experience with IBM in marketing. I have been an independent consultant with start-ups and early stage companies. I have strong Excel skills and data analysis experience.

Photography

Before moving to NYC I was a photojournalist. A regular contributor to the AP NewsWire photo service, I also completed assignments directly for newspapers and magazines and organizations. Undergrad degree in photojournalism at Indiana University. Managed the photo staff at the campus newspaper, one of only two paid circulation campus papers, for two years. In recent years I've been coming back to shooting after 8+ years with IBM in Marketing. Founder of a non-profit, 1 Life 1,000 Words, developing skills for professional photojournalists and assisting families to become more active with photography.

Video Production

Before shifting to still photography I worked for ten years in field production, and with commercial and public broadcast stations in Indiana. Thanks to the rise of non-linear editing tools on computers and high end photo cameras with video, I've been able to come back to this work in recent years. Shooting and editing corporate projects is part of my current professional work.
