About Sarah

Hi there!

I am an experienced tutor specializing in AP Biology, SAT-II Biology, and English. I help my students prepare for standardized tests as well as general school tests, grade improvement, and homework help. Passionate about wildlife conservation, I am currently pursuing a Master's in biology and I work full-time as a zoo exhibit developer for the Bronx Zoo, Central Park Zoo, and other educational institutions.

As a writer of zoo graphics, it's my job to communicate complex science concepts in ways that general audiences can understand. I pride myself on my ability to make abstract ideas approachable and personally relevant to visitors while maintaining their scientific accuracy, a skill that translates perfectly into my tutoring style.

As a graduate student of biology, I was awarded a Global Conservation & Field Scholarship to travel to the Amazon rainforest to study birds and tropical forest ecology. I also study diamondback terrapins (a turtle species) here in New York City. In October 2016, I was proud to win first place at a scientific conference for presenting my terrapin research.

I graduated from NYU in 2012 with a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Psychology. Upon graduating, I was awarded the department's "Excellence in Fieldwork Award for outstanding commitment, engagement, and growth" in my internship facilitating after-school science activities with first and second graders.

I have experience working with students with diverse learning needs. I look forward to hearing from you and discussing your tutoring goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I received a score of 34 on the ACT English exam.

Biology

I am currently pursing my Master’s degree in biology. My recent graduate coursework has covered concepts in cellular biology, plants, invertebrates, the human body, and bio-engineering, with a special focus on ecology and environmental biology.

Writing

I have tutored English writing and reading for the past several years in New York for students from age ten to sixteen.

Zoology

As a professional zoo exhibit developer, I perform research and write the messaging for the exhibits at all the New York City zoological parks, including the Bronx Zoo, Central Park Zoo, New York Aquarium, Prospect Park Zoo, and Queens Zoo. I absolutely love being part of a creative team that connects zoo visitors to nature through engaging experiences. Outside of work, I am pursing my Master’s degree in biology. My graduate coursework recently took me to the Amazon rainforest to study birds and tropical forest ecology. I was one of two recipients of a Global Conservation & Field Scholarship for commitment towards furthering conservation and environmental education.
