About Jennifer

A recent graduate of USC (a proud Trojan...fight on!), I have a deep passion for tutoring. I started my own tutoring business when I was in high school and have enjoyed it ever since then. Learning is one of my favorite things in life, and I try to pass that enthusiasm on to my students. An aspiring actress, I use my theatre skills in tutoring by connecting with a wide variety of people, improvising new ways to communicate the material, and engaging interest in the subject matter. Friendly, dependable, and approachable, I am always willing to go the extra mile with my students-students of all ages and abilities. While I tutor in a wide variety of subjects, I especially enjoy math and writing skills. Math was always one of my favorite subjects in school, and I enjoy the process of communicating those concepts to students. Writing is also exciting for me to tutor because I am fascinated by my students' perspectives and how to make those stronger in their own writing. In my free time, I love going to concerts and plays, reading, cooking, crossword puzzles, and exploring New York.

Math has always made sense to me. I was lucky enough to have some great math teachers growing up who taught me the importance of showing my work and breaking down the steps. I earned a 5 on my AP Calculus AB test, so I'm proficient in math skills up to that level. I love finding new ways to present the material to my students so that they always understand.

Reading is one of my greatest loves. I enjoy the written word and communicating with others. I love to pass on that enthusiasm to my students. I am interested in concrete strategies to encourage improvement. I have vast experience in all areas of English.

Incredibly patient and understanding, I know how to work with young students. Since I have the experience of working with older students, I know which foundational skills are essential for younger students to understand. I know how to keep younger ones engaged and focused.

Looking forward to working and learning together!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have over 10 years of tutoring experience with K-6th grade students. Through my experience, I have volunteered at an elementary after school program, privately tutored, and tutored through an agency. Teachers at the elementary school constantly referred me to their students' families. I have multiple references and those same students used me again when they were in middle and high school. Over the years, I have listened to many young students and helped them overcome their fears and insecurities. I remember one specific student who struggled with all subjects and expressing his feelings. Through constant work with him, we were able to improve in every subject and his mom and teacher were very excited about his progress. I also have lots of experience tutoring older students and therefore, understand which concepts need to be reinforced for future excellence. I can tutor in all elementary subjects, but find that reading and math are usually the ones we focus on the most. For example, I know which math concepts to drill (addition and subtraction fact families, times tables, place value knowledge, etc.) so more complex material is easier to learn. I stress showing work and breaking down the material so it less confusing. I also know how to go through reading and test for comprehension. I encourage discipline and focus in our sessions so that progress can be made. I am an engaging tutor with lots of patience for young student's energy!
