About Leah

I am a 22 year-old, May 2015 graduate of North Carolina Central University. I graduated Cum Laude with bachelor of arts degrees in English and Mass Communication with concentrations in writing and journalism. Three-quarters of my college career was dedicated to serving the student newspaper, The Campus Echo, as a staff writer/photographer, an arts and entertainment editor and an assistant editor, respectively. I also had reporting and writing internships with Duke University's Office of News and Communications, INDY Week and community newspaper, The Durham Voice. A native of Charlotte, NC, I moved to Brooklyn, NY just three weeks after graduation for an internship in public relations and social media management with a start-up company.

My mother was a teacher most of my life. I grew up in a home where homework was done before dinner and no student agenda went unchecked. Despite my childhood resentment, I developed a love for learning (particularly reading and writing) that I have grown to find irreplaceable. For me, tutoring is a chance to help instill the love of learning and self-enhancement in our youth. It is a chance to give a child the skill set it takes to pass the tyrannies of standardized testing. It is the chance to help a child read and understand any and every slip of paper, legislation, exam, ticket, contract, notice, will, textbook, essay, memoir, poem, and James Baldwin play ever set before him/her. It is a chance to help a child succeed.

As an English major, reading and writing have been passions of mine since I read my first sentence at age 4. After taking all honors English courses in middle school (not to mention with awesome teachers) I realized I had a true passion for reading. In high school I took as many honors courses as I could and moved up to AP English my junior year. By the time senior year rolled around, I opted for honors English to make room for my AP Spanish 5 and AP Psychology classes. I'm glad I did, however, because that year I (informally) declared my college major would be English.

If you are interested in getting to know me better as a tutor feel free to contact me at anytime.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
