About Sam

My passion for teaching stems from my passion for learning. I've always had a thirst for knowledge and one of my biggest goals as a tutor is to cultivate that in others. When learning is fun and exciting, success follows. As a tutor, I aim to be supportive and flexible, making lessons as collaborative as possible. With a conversational approach, I hope to ensure the student is engaged in and internalizing what we are discussing. Whenever possible, I emphasize grasping concepts rather than memorizing facts, even in areas like vocabulary for which the usual task involves rote studying of long word lists. Not only does conceptual learning better prepare the student for anything that comes his/her way, even if it's not something that has been explicitly memorized, but it also makes it much more likely that the student will be able to relate to (and, ultimately remember) the material.

A bit about me: I graduated high school in 2009 with a 2320 SAT score and as valedictorian of my class. At Harvard, I studied economics with a secondary focus on psychology, graduating in 2013 with honors and a 3.9 GPA. Since then, I've spent my time working in the corporate world as a management consultant. I'm currently in the midst of a short sabbatical from work for the fall, giving me a chance to pursue other interests, such as this! As a result, I'm open to one-time sessions or something more regular. I'm available throughout the week, and am not wedded to any particular location (though I'm based in midtown Manhattan).

The SAT is much more a thinking test than a content test. Particularly with math, the key is mastering the thought-process.

English, too, can be more of a conceptual exercise than many realize. The more words are thought of like formulas, the less memorization is required and the easier these sections become.

And having grown up on Long Island, I'm very familiar with the NYS Regents exams. Believe it or not, I even look back on them with fondness!

Please feel free to reach out with any questions - I'm looking forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
