About Jonathan

I am a dedicated professional educator, whose experience includes over seven years of tutoring and three years of teaching high school physics across all levels. Currently pursuing a master's degree at Teachers College, Columbia University, I am committed to becoming the best educator I can be. A Magna Cum Laude BS/BA graduate in Physics and Music, I bring a history of hard-work, creativity, and subject knowledge, and I offer my students a promise that I will do all that I can to help them achieve their goals.

I believe that everyone can learn, and we all do it in different ways. I want to do more than help my students improve their grades – I strive to help my students build their self-confidence and to really love learning.

I specialize in tutoring science and math, but I love tutoring no matter what the subject. I value my clients' feedback, and promise fast and frequent communication about lessons, homework plans, and progress reports. I'm eager to hear from you, and look forward to helping you reach your goals!

Having worked in a public school, I understand the everyday challenges that high-schoolers face, from balancing extra-curricular activities to navigating the college admissions process. And having worked at a national SAT prep center, I'm trained in the best test-taking strategies for standardized tests. Over the years, I have helped countless students grow their test scores and get accepted into better colleges than they thought possible.

I earned my B.S. in Physics, and my teaching certification is in Physics as well. I have taught high school courses from Physical Science through AP Physics. I have also written updated curriculum for the new AP Physics exams, and have trained with those on the cutting-edge of physics education, studying how to maximize interaction and cooperation in the classroom in order to help connect with more students.

Having taken a mathematics minor in college, I am well-versed in topics including College Math, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Calculus. My background in physics has taught me how make abstract math concepts more tangible and meaningful.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have a minor in mathematics, and my work in physics instruction leans heavily on a wide range of math skills, including algebra 1, algebra 2, geometry, trigonometry, precalculus, and calculus.

Algebra 2

I have a minor in mathematics, and my work in physics instruction leans heavily on a wide range of math skills, including algebra 1, algebra 2, geometry, trigonometry, precalculus, and calculus.

English

English has always been a favorite subject of mine. Indeed, language is equal parts structure and creativity, and mastery of English requires keenly understanding both of these elements. Like mathematics, the rules of grammar form the foundation of reading and writing, but only by building a rich vocabulary and acute sense of form, style, and purpose can one achieve excellence.

I have tutored English at the elementary level through SAT prep courses, and, more recently, have gained experience working with students who are learning English as a second language.

Music Theory

A practicing musician from the age of 12, I had studied advanced music theory in music camp before entering high school. After progressing through all of the music theory classes my school offered, I continued my music education with a Bachelors of Arts in Music degree program, and a minor in Music Technology.

My college coursework included music theory of all major eras in the Western music tradition, from the Baroque period through the 20th Century, including serialism and modern jazz.

Physics

Bachelors of Science in Physics; NJ Certified Teacher of Physics

I have been a teacher of high school physics for three years. My classes include Physical Science (Integrated Science), Principles of Chemistry and Physics, Physics Academic, Honors Physics, and AP Physics B.

Precalculus

I have a minor in mathematics, and my work in physics instruction leans heavily on a wide range of math skills, including algebra 1, algebra 2, geometry, trigonometry, precalculus, and calculus.

SAT Math

I have tutored SAT Math since 2010, and took a mathematics minor in college.

Great tutor

Jonathan, who has outstanding credentials in physics, was the ideal tutor to help my son prepare for his physics finals. He has a very patient manner and was a calming influence. He helped my son go through the semester of work and zone in on potentially weak areas. He was professional, prompt and easy to work with. We would not hesitate to call on Jonathan again for more tutoring sessions.
