About Holly

I'm a classically trained musician in graduate school, and I studied both flute performance and French during my undergraduate studies at Northwestern University.

While a student at Northwestern, I worked as a tutor through the Department of French and Italian, where I helped beginner and intermediate level college-aged French students with their homework assignments, test preparation, reading, video comprehension, writing and conversation skills. I've also worked in Paris teaching English to young children. Through my experiences, I understand the differences and difficulties between native French and English speakers. My tutoring approach is adapted to the individual. I can help you or your child with middle/high school or college level test prep (including AP exams and SAT II), reinforce oral or written comprehension skills, grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary.

A bit more about my background: For as long as I can remember, I have been passionate about foreign language studies, and I have studied Spanish, French, German and Italian. I began studying French over 10 years ago, with the ultimate goal of someday studying music in France, because I was fascinated by the history of the flute in Paris and I adore performing the music French composers (Ravel is my favorite composer!). My infatuation with French culture was ignited on my first trip to France on an exchange at age 16. I went on to study French alongside music in college, and spent a semester studying abroad in Paris at the ├ęcole Normale de Musique. I'm now working towards my Master's degree in music, and recently finished a sabbatical year from my graduate studies, again in Paris, on a study/research grant. I suspect that my love for languages stems from the same part of me that loves music: both subjects are, at the base, a means of communication, but they also represent people and their experiences.

Through my experiences described above, I am fluent in French, and have spent much time living in France, immersed in the language and culture. Because I am not a native speaker, I understand the concepts that can pose difficulty to native English speakers and explain them clearly and succinctly. I love speaking French and I can't wait to share my knowledge with you! Please contact me if you have any questions.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
