The Maryland Institute College of Art (Painting)
Columbia University (Other)
I am a fine arts painter with strong technical and academic skills. I have been selling and showing my own artwork as well as commissioned portraits through my own studio for over 15 years now. I have five years of experience teaching K through University level students. I am a former co-owner and co-instructor at New York Drawing School in Brooklyn, NY. I hold a BA from The Maryland Institute College of Art and a MFA from Columbia University.
I will teach you: how to break 3D space down into 2D space, how to handle your chosen medium, color theory, how to choose subject matter and how to work with photography, lessons on related artists and art history, and material toxicity/safety.
We will critique your past work and have a deep discussion on how you would like to move forward. I will make suggestions on technique, materials, composition, reading material, draftsmanship…etc. This is great for artists that feel stuck and/or need a second opinion
If you are planning on going to art or design school, it is always a good idea to get a second opinion. We will sift through your work and pick out the strongest pieces. We will discuss the possibility of creating supplemental work as well.
You don't understand modern art or you don't know how to talk about art and you have a date at a museum. I will make art history easy and guide you through the ages.
The subjects I have taught range widely: Foundations (2D and 3D art), advanced oil, acrylic, plein air painting, portfolio development, sumi-e, basic watercolor, advanced watercolor, basic drawing, portrait drawing and painting, pastels, and colored pencil.
We can meet locally (within the 5 boroughs of NYC) at your place, a public place or online via Skype or Google Hangouts.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
