About Geraldine

I began tutoring while at Mount Holyoke College, where I led a volunteer tutoring project in West Springfield, MA, and tutored children in high needs areas. I continued this work back in New York and spent a year as a classroom teacher at a local high school, while continuing to private tutor. Tutoring allows me to learn about children's specific needs and to develop action plans that allow us to work together to come to our ultimate goals. Through hard work and perseverance, the students I have worked with have been able to excel academically.

I have worked with students to help them gain admission to some of the country's best undergraduate and high school programs. By tailoring personal statements to specific institutions and making students' voices come alive, I have been able to aid students as they gain admission to some of the country's most elite institutions, such as: Barnard, Columbia, Cornell, Carnegie Mellon, Trinity, Mount Holyoke, Smith, Macaulay Honors, Vassar, NYU, Amherst. I have also assisted students in their applications to New York City day schools (including Brearley, Collegiate, and Trinity) and Northeastern boarding schools, including Andover and Exeter.

I have a Master's in Education from the Harvard University, where I studied Education Policy and Management. While I was at Harvard, I also tutored adults who needed to develop ELL skills, tutored adults in GED subjects, and in basic computer usage.

I am confident in my ability to train students to pass the Algebra regents, and to guide them through test taking strategies for the math section of the SAT. I am also able to guide them through ways to improve scores on the evidence-based English/writing section of the SAT.

I studied sociology in undergrad and have a deep understanding of theory.

I have studied language and language development and have created unique ESL curricula for students I have tutored.

I am a native Spanish speaker with demonstrated proficiency in the Spanish language, and an ability to teach the subject to speakers of other languages.

My adeptness in the language stems from my own personal ability to speak French and Mandarin Chinese.

I am very excited to get to know you, and look forward to working with you to improve your own academic skills. Reach out if you would like to schedule lessons or to learn some more!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

I have taught English at the high school level and have fared very well on standardized test schools. Currently, I guide students through reading exercises for the SSAT, ISEE, ACT, and SAT.

College Counseling

At Harvard, I took three higher education courses that focused on access to institutions and assimilation. I took a class with Lee Coffin, the Director of Admissions at Tufts University, who allowed us to understand the college admissions process at elite institutions and how to create access for all.

Common Core

I studied the Common Core curriculum at Long Island University-Brooklyn Campus and subsequently used this in my classroom as a public high school teacher in New York City. I continued this study at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and have used it in my work at my school access organization. This has allowed me to teach students individually and to tutor them in subjects for which they struggle.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been tutoring students in various Elementary (K-6) subjects for over 8 years. As a child, I was in elementary and middle school gifted programs and use this knowledge to create independent curriculum for students with whom I have worked. Through targeted practice, I have been able to increase reading levels, and have students excel on standardized examinations. I have a Master's in Education from the Harvard University, where I studied Education Policy and Management.

Regents

I obtained a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation from NYSED in 2006. I spent a year as a classroom teacher at a local high school, while continuing to private tutor.

Spanish

I have taken and aced college level Spanish classes, translated for research projects at Columbia University, and for group therapy sessions.

Study Skills

While knowing subject content is important, the best way to excel academically is to learn how to study well. Be it for the SAT, a Regents examination, or a classroom test, using study skills and knowing HOW to take exams is one of the greatest markers of success. I have been able to raise student PSAT and SAT scores over 100 points based on study skills alone, with over 8 years of experience. I began tutoring while at Mount Holyoke College, where I led a volunteer tutoring project in West Springfield, MA, and tutored children in high needs areas.

Writing

Attending schools in New York City right now is very competitive, and being admitted to top universities is as well. As such, I am able to help students who need help with their writing skills in order to develop strong personal statements for their college and graduate application packages. With my writing skills, we will be able to work together to create the best version of you possible, so that you are more competitive in admissions.

We worked on the Common app/college essay; we brainstormed ideas; feedback was very helpful; and Geraldine was amiable and easy to talk to.
