About Mona

I teach students how to write strong, engaging essays and academic papers. I also teach them how to read literature attentively and analytically, for both understanding and pleasure. Whether we are reading literature or writing, we use the same analytical tool kit to understand the overall structures of a piece. I show my students how to take apart an essay or a thesis, just as a tailor would deconstruct a jacket, to understand how it’s made. We talk about how writers approach an assignment, from the initial idea to the final edit, working through each draft carefully and paying close attention to both the structure and the language.

Because I've worked as a professional writer for more than twenty-five years, I have lots of experience with the writing process. My articles have appeared in The Los Angeles Times, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Nation, Art News and many other publications and websites. I've also written for 11th and 12th grade language arts textbooks that introduce students to essays, fiction, poetry and drama and help them develop advanced reading and writing skills.

I studied English literature and writing at Columbia University with some of the top people in the field. I've also worked at several leading magazines, including Vanity Fair, Vogue and Glamour, and published articles in many magazines and newspapers. But more important than any of these credentials are the many years I've devoted to reading literature and to writing. There is no substitute for years of day-to-day hands-on experience!

I love working with teens and 20-somethings because they usually have wonderfully surprising and interesting ways of seeing the world. Please contact me if you want to learn more about the way I teach or would like to schedule a lesson.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I graduated from Columbia University, where I majored in Writing and English literature. For years, I worked in the magazine industry and I have published articles in many magazines, newspapers and websites. I've also written for language arts textbooks for high school students. Now I counsel students on their college applications and teach teens and adults how to read and understand literature and how to write clear and effective prose.

Knowledgable and enjoyable tutor — Mona taught me about creating a thesis and making my essay more structured. We worked through it and thought of different ways to ensure my essay was fluid and made sense in the context of my thesis. She pointed out important information and highlighted different aspects I wouldn't have otherwise noticed ...
