About Binyamin

I'm a fourth year PhD candidate in Semitic Studies. I love teaching -- that's why I'm going into academia. Teachers and tutors often forget that students are encountering the subject with a different knowledge base. I find that a teaching approach that is hyper-aware of this is key for successful learning. The teacher-student relationship is the cornerstone of the learning process, and constant feedback and improvement always helps me to impart my knowledge and experience to my students. I pride myself for my ability to teach effectively at the levels of young adults, college students, and adults.

My specialty subjects are Semitic languages (Hebrew [Biblical, Medieval, and Modern], Aramaic [all dialects], Syriac, basic Arabic, and Akkadian), Semitic literature (including Biblical literature), Jewish History (Ancient and Medieval), religious studies,

I also tutor SAT and GRE English efficiently and competitively.

As a Graduate student, my time is flexible. However, I do require a cancellation notice of at least three hours.

I taught beginning Hebrew to adults for three years at the Spanish-Portuguese Synagogue, the oldest Synagogue in the USA. I read Hebrew literature in my spare time (currently making my way through the oeuvre of Shai Agnon), and have enjoyed composing Hebrew poetry since I was a teenager.

I have always loved English prose and poetry. I got a perfect score on the GRE English section.

My doctoral dissertation is on Jewish-Christian interaction in the 7th-10th c. Babylonia. I am teaching part of a course on Jewish Magic at City College (NY) this Fall semester.

I have been lifting seriously for the past five years. I focus on improving aesthetics and body symmetry through healthy bodybuilding routines.

My tutoring sessions generally either take place in a library space that is convenient for the tutee. Although I do find that Skype is adequate, I prefer to teach in person.

I'd like to help you succeed -- let's get started today!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I am a 4th-year PhD student in the Bible and Semitics department at Yeshiva University. I have have been involved in academic biblical studies for about 7 years (I completed my BA, majoring in Jewish Studies, from YU as well). I have edited a two-volume academic book on Biblical interpretation in the Dead Sea Scrolls. Learning and teaching academic and traditional biblical studies is a strong passion of mine.

Hebrew

I speak Hebrew fluently. I spent 2 years in Israel in an Israeli post-high school program in which there was strong integration of Americans and Israelis. I taught adult-education Hebrew for three years, and love teaching languages. I bring creative language-learning exercises into my teaching, and there is no greater joy than when I see my students progress to having a real utility with the language.
