About Nadine

I hold an MFA in Nonfiction Writing from Columbia University. What does that mean? It means I have a Master's degree in a broad division of writing which includes memoirs, personal essays, academic papers, journalism, reviews...really anything but fiction and poetry. That said, I'm able to assist with any type of writing project you bring me (including work for a creative writing course, of which I’ve taken many). My specialty lies where nonfiction and creativity intersect, with pieces such as college admission essays.

At Muhlenberg College in Pennsylvania I worked as a Writing Center Tutor, holding office hours in which students brought me their papers from all disciplines and I addressed their writing concerns in 45-minute sessions. This was particularly challenging because none of these students were known to me in advance, nor was the subject matter of their papers. I also worked as a Writing Assistant, whereby I was the ongoing writing tutor for two required freshman Writing-Intensive courses. Students in these courses met with me on a continuing basis, both in groups and individually, to build writing skills and revise their academic papers. I found it particularly rewarding to track students' growth throughout the school year. I also worked as a Learning Assistant for a Psychological Statistics course, holding group workshops and individual sessions to guide students in converting their numerical data into reports that adhered to required APA style.

I tutored writing in NYC for years before coming to WyzAnt; my students have been as varied as the city itself. Some are college students whose sentence structure needs work in order to transmit their knowledge of the subject matter. Some have learning disabilities, some are at the top of their class (not mutually exclusive!), and some excel at other subjects but struggle with writing. Some are self-motivated to produce their best work, and others just want their work to be finished (I welcome the challenge of igniting interest in the latter type). Some are tweens who name writing as their favorite subject, and some revile it. I’ve worked with students whose anxiety was the prime impediment to their output, and I’ve worked with students whose overconfidence did them an equal disservice.

Mostly, though, my students defy extremes. I pride myself on meeting each one of them where they are, and on tailoring my approach to suit each person’s unique story and situation. Tutoring writing is the perfect confluence of everything I love most--words, people, paying close attention. I'm here to help you grow, whether it's by way of ongoing skill-building or by assisting you with a particular writing project. I find words fascinating, shades of meaning enthralling, and I derive what is probably too much joy from piquing someone else's interest in such things.

I'm available on select weekdays 2pm through evening, and at varied times on weekends. I am open to meeting in public places (college libraries, public plazas, coffee shops) that are a reasonable commute from the Upper West Side. If you like, we can move to sessions in your home after an initial public meeting. While most of my tutoring experience is with middle school through college students, I was a nanny for 8 years and ADORE kids, so I welcome smaller clients, too! (For those smaller clients, I'm more flexible with foregoing the initial public meeting requirement, if that's your preference--I know firsthand how difficult it can be to navigate NYC with children).

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Spelling

I am passionate about and experienced with all elements of writing. This includes--but is not limited to--academic essays, creative compositions, admission essays, grammar, syntax, punctuation and spelling.
