About Laura

I am an enthusiastic educator with a passion for making learning both engaging and fun! I have experience working with both elementary school children and adults.

Having graduated magna cum laude with an honors degree in Philosophy, I know the importance of being able to both read and write clearly and with confidence: this was essential to my success in earning such a degree. Ever since, I have been successful in passing that same level of enthusiasm and diligence for self-expression and reading comprehension to my students.

Teaching Children: My pedagogical outlook on working with children is one defined by patience and consistent support. Oftentimes a struggling student is grappling with feelings of inadequacy, or even disinterest. Whatever the case may be, they must be offered an encouraging learning environment that allows them to feel less intimidated by the learning material. My tutoring style begins with assessment and identifying the student’s specific comprehensive challenges, and continues with a gentle yet rigorous push to break bad habits and replace them with more effective techniques.

Teaching Adults: Adults also struggle with these same issues! An inability to read or write effectively can negatively impact both your personal and professional life, often leading to much frustration and self-doubt. I have experience helping adult students draft personal statements to get into competitive academic programs with very successful results. I also help with business writing, resume and cover letter improvement, and English conversation for non-English speakers. Communication through reading and writing is essential from a young age to adult years! It all comes down to breaking down the material, creating a dialogue, identifying problem areas, and consistent practice to instill effective reading and writing skills. I have assisted many ambitious individuals with their resumes and cover letters, resulting in interviews, increased networking opportunities, and job placement.

Quelling any worries about learning is my goal. I am excellent at pinpointing what might be troubling you, and bringing out that confidence that can sometimes so easily elude us. Confidence is the key to learning and the key to motivation.

I look forward to meeting you, and working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Reading

Skilled at teaching phonetics, spelling, and reading comprehension. Writing and successfully expressing ideas clearly and confidently on paper is my aim when it comes to working with your child. I use a variety of methods, depending on how your child learns best: if they understand concepts better when presented visually, I will use flash cards with drawings to assist them in learning and retaining the material. I create a positive environment in which your child can learn and a caring attitude which helps develop self esteem, especially if your child is struggling.

Writing

As a philosophy major, I have been trained to think critically and express ideas clearly and creatively. I have worked with students of all age groups, from 1st grade to adult. Also, I love to make learning as fun as possible! Learning is hard work, and it is important to maintain a sense of humor: this helps to retain a positive attitude, especially for students who struggle and suffer from lack of confidence. My work as a Copy Editor, blogger, and freelance writer have all contributed to my advanced writing abilities which I would love to pass on to anyone willing to learn!
