About Marianna

Hi there! I am a Ph.D. student studying Cognitive Science in Education at Columbia University. I have 10 years of teaching experience, including 5 years of teaching test prep for Kaplan. I've taught GRE, SAT, PSAT, ACT, SHSAT, and Common Core prep classes both as a classroom instructor and as a one-on-one tutor, tailoring my sessions to the individual needs of each student.

I have access to a lot of resources, including full length tests, online quizzes, and study guides.

My specialty in teaching strategies to people who think test taking doesn't come naturally for them. I've had tons of students who felt that they were simply not good test-takers and all of them improved, so you'll be in good hands.

My research focuses on how novices differ from experts in strategy choice and how educators can turn these novices into experts. And I love putting my research into practice!

In addition to test prep, I've worked with many students over the past three years in preparation for applying to colleges and graduate schools across the country. I am pleased (and proud!) to announce that several of them have earned admission to multiple programs to which they applied, including ivy league and UC schools.

It doesn't matter if you have yet to crack open your prep book, whether you're looking to iron out the final kinks just before test day, or need help completing your grad school or college application--I can provide exactly what you need.

My rate is $120 an hour but I offer reduced rates if you are interested in multi-hour packages.

I typically meet my students at Columbia and I always reserve a private room that comes equipped with comfortable seating and a whiteboard. It is amazingly helpful to have not just a quiet space, but also one that serves as a mini classroom. My experience is that students have found this environment very conducive to their learning. However, I am flexible and will choose the location with the student to best meet their needs.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I've tutored common core math and ELA to several students in the past, with some students scoring as low as in the 30th percentile shooting up to 80th. As an educational researcher, I also design instructional programming and games for use in NYC public schools, with common core standards embedded in every design. I am very familiar with common core standards and best practices for teaching them.

R

I've analyzed my research data in R. I know how to use R for data cleaning, graphics (base and GGPlot), and analysis. I also took a doctoral level course in data analysis and visualization with R.

Very knowledgable GRE tutor

In our session, Marianna explained to me with great clarity the Analytical Writing section of the GRE. The section had not made complete sense to me beforehand, but after two hours with Marianna, I felt like I understood the section and had greater confidence to do well on it on test day. Marianna was extremely nice, patient, and clear in her explanations. I would definitely reach out to Marianna
