About Luis

I attended a prestigious music middle school in Lincoln Center Special Music School, Frank Sinatra School of the Arts, Young Artists Program at Kaufman Center, Nyack College School of Music, and New England Conservatory.

In each institution I was taught and tested on Music Theory, Ear Training, and Music History. When it comes to Flute, I have been teaching as a freelance teacher for 9 years now, and have a minor in Music Education with a concentration in Flute Pedagogy. I have coached orchestra sectionals, ran clinics, given masterclasses, and even formed ensembles for public concerts!

Overall, I am a riveting, up and coming flutist from New York City. I am a consummate stylist, enjoying a wide range of styles from the Baroque to new music. Even at a young age I showed promise. I was a student with the Young Artist Program at the Kaufman Center while he attended High School at the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts.

World famous Tony Bennett, the President of the Sinatra School, found me practicing in the staircase one day and called him a “cool cat”, then helped me get the opportunity to perform in Carnegie Hall with Alexander Markov, one of the top violin virtuoso's in the realm of classical music.

I have performed at such venues as Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, Le Poisson Rouge, Symphony Space, The Jay Sharp Theatre at the Julliard School of Music, and Kodak Hall at the Eastman School of Music. Diaz has performed with the Inter-School Orchestra for numerous years, and has performed with the BAM Philharmonic, the Astoria Symphony Orchestra, “Pershing's Own” US Military Band, Little Orchestra Society and the Manhattan School of Music Symphonic Orchestra.

I became interested in classical music when my elementary school class took monthly trips to the New York Philharmonic, and this is where I discovered my love for the flute as an instrument. In elementary school, I began my flute studies through a scholarship program sponsored by the New York Philharmonic at the Lucy Moses School. Through the guidance of Dr. Valerie Holmes, my first flute teacher for 8 years, I began taking lessons in the fourth grade and then entered the Special Music School in the sixth grade.

I will complete my Masters degree in flute performance at the New England Conservatory of Music in 2018.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Flute

I have just graduated from Nyack College School of Music with a Bachelors in Music with a concentration in Flute Performance. I have been playing the Flute for 12 years, and have competed both locally in NY and nationally. I have had masterclasses instructed by Bart Feller, Kazuo Tokito, Sir James Galway, Keith Underwood, Paula Robison, and Alexa Still to name a few. I have performed in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, Symphony Space, Kodak Hall in Eastman School of Music, Le Poission Rouge, and Julliard's Jay Sharp Theatre. I plan on getting my Masters in Flute Performance either in New England Conservatory next fall. I have experience in chamber, solo, orchestral (classic and pit) repertoire. I have given masterclasses and lessons at numerous middle-schools and high-schools as an invited musical guest. I have 9 years of experience when it comes to teaching and especially enjoy implementing good performance habits while breaking ones that inhibit a players ability.

General Music

Along with 12 years of classical experience, I have also performed music from Asia, Brazil, Buenos Aires, Africa, as well as experimental music, contemporary music, music with tape (prerecorded music), on top of classical, romantic, baroque, and medieval music.
I also have plenty of resources and teaching materials such as handouts, CD's, sheet music and access to an extensive database from my alma mater )

Music History

I have taken Music History courses for 12 years, and have covered influential composers and pivotal compositions from the medieval up until 20th century music. I have knowledge about composers like Palestrina, Lassus, Victoria, Handel, Scarlatti, Vivaldi, Telemann, Monteverdi, Mozart, Gluck, Schubert, Smetana, Liszt, Verdi, Bizet, Borodin, Debussy, Piazzola, Bruckner, Dvorak, Puccini, Mahler, Strauss, Tchaikovsky, Schoenberg, Shostakovich, Stravinsky, Steve Reich, William Gordon, Varese, Bozza, Terry Riley just to name some in the best order I can recall.

Music Theory

I have taken music theory for 12 years, as well as Form & Analysis which includes understanding the forms of music I have had to be able to micro-analyze entire works like sonatas and even entire Beethoven Symphonies.

Theory and Ear Training go hand in hand so with theory one has to learn how to apply what they have learned to their personal repertoire in order to see and understand harmonic, melodic, and technical patterns within a piece regardless of the genre.

I also scored 100% on Wyzant's Theory Test, so I am sure that's worth something haha

Voice (Music)

I have taken 8 years of voice lessons while studying the flute , and have been involved in many musical and classical productions while attending Special Music School, in Lincoln Center. This is an educational facility where music classes and academic classes are disbursed throughout each students schedule.
I have been in my alma mater's Chorale for 3 years, and Opera Workshop productions of Die Fledermaus, as Dr. Blind and chorus, Il Impressario by Mozart as the leading tenor role, and Gianni Schicchi as the principal tenor role of Rinuccio.
I have been taught in the style of Bel Canto Technique and I am a tenor with my falke (voice type) being 'wagnerian' according to my coach and vocal professors.
