About Phillip

Hi my name is Phillip K. I'm currently a M.S. studying mathematics and biology. My academic interests are in the understanding of the mind by using a computational approach. Though this has no impact on your child, I believe you should understand what I do and where I come from. Since high school I've proctored and tutored at various private learning institutions on Long Island that were set up to help students that were either falling behind in class or wanted to get ahead of the curve. As such I've become proficient in helping advanced students and students who just needed the extra push to help them understand. Through my experience in tutoring, I've been able to change my curriculum according to the student that I am tutoring. I'm able to tutor students in all different subjects and I can bring my own supplies and literature on any subject.

Though I'm able to tutor students in any subject, my expertise lies in helping students get over the geometry/algebra topics that they face either in advanced middle school or high school. It seems as though these two topics are the hardest for early high school students. I've also tutored elementary and middle school students. Elementary/Middle school students need a guiding hand in order for them to develop good study habits which will translate over to high school and help them tackle future topics. I'm able to sit down with students in any grade level and speed and help them not only answer the problems and topics but to help them understand. I approach tutoring not from grade standpoint, but from trying to help the student truly understand and learn. Feel free to contact me with any questions regarding my tutoring approach, my curriculum or any other questions that you might have. I hope that I can help your child in the future.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Worked at 3 different after school programs helping students understand pre-algebra to geometry. Students who used to hate mathematics became honors students and were eventually accepted into Stuyvesant, Bronx Science and other prep schools.
