About Daniel

I'm a personable and thorough tutor who treats each of my clients as individuals with unique learning needs. I have nearly five years of tutoring experience and two and a half years of teaching experience. I'm very good at finding the mystique and appeal in ordinarily rote material, like the SATs, which helps my clients retain the material and reduces their level of anxiety.

I'm a novelist and short story writer who recently completed an MFA in Fiction Writing at Columbia University. During my time at Columbia, I taught a creative writing INTRO seminar to undergraduates, entitled "Metafiction and Meta-nonfiction," and a multi-genre workshop to adult students at Common Ground, an assisted living facility for the recently homeless. Last summer, I taught a literature course to fifteen through seventeen-year-olds enrolled in the Columbia Summer Program for High School Students. In 2013, I graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Pennsylvania, where I was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

As a tutor, I've worked with middle, high school, elementary and pre-kindergarten students. I can tutor middle school students in the gamut of their academic subjects, while with high school students, I specialize in English and history and writing and test preparation. I've also prepared pre-kindergarten and elementary school students for "Gifted and Talented" tests. No matter the subject, my approach reacts fluidly to my clients' personalities and needs. Get in touch for more information.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

I have tutored high school students in college-level curriculums for a year. My students often hope to attend selective universities and speak to me about their coursework and writing as it pertains to their college plans. I have tutored and taught writing (including the sorts of personal essays that college admissions officers seek) in several posts, including a position at Columbia University. I went through the university admissions cycle twice, once for my undergraduate degree (which I received from the University of Pennsylvania), and again for my graduate degree (which I will receive, this fall, from Columbia). During the application process, I gained many insights into college admissions that I often share with my high school students.
