About Brian

I began teaching while an undergraduate at Columbia University in the City of New York, almost ten years ago. I tutored SAT Verbal, as well as academic subjects at the high school and university level. It was during these years that I learned by experience the art of pedagogy and the challenge of communicating concepts and ideas to my students. I have since made it my responsibility as an educator to become very well-acquainted with each of my students' thought processes and aptitudes. This, I believe, is the most important aspect of teaching. My MA in Sociology from the American University in Cairo, a degree which was funded by my University Writing Center Fellowship. While abroad, I taught Egyptian and International and students at the university and high school levels academic writing, including argumentative essays, social science writing, analysis and other forms of writing.

I have 10 years experience tutoring the SAT Critical Reading, Writing and Essay Sections and 5 years teaching the GRE. I myself took the GRE not too long ago (for Phd applications) and received a 169 on the Verbal Reasoning and a 6.0 on the Analytical Writing. I have also taught the TOEFL and IELTS extensively. Obviously, likewise I have spent a lot of my life instructing writing. I am as prepared and excited to help students prepare for these standardized exams as I am to assist high school and university with their courses in school. We all have our weak points or areas that we should improve, and to be a part of a students growth has always been fulfilling for me as a teacher and as a person.

I am willing to travel to students' homes, or we may hold lessons in cafes or libraries. When the circumstances permit, I could hold lessons in my home office, which is near Columbus Circle. I am flexible with scheduling.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I have a Master's degree in Anthropology and Sociology from the American University in Cairo, and many of the projects that I worked on as an undergraduate at Columbia required that I be familiar with Anthropological discourse. I likewise have taught and tutored undergraduates in Anthropology. I know the language, jargon and discourse well and can convey them well in simple English.

English

I have a a BA from Columbia in History and an MA in Sociology from the American University in Cairo. I have been well-trained as a writer and reader and have for years been passing on what I know to my students.
