About Sam

Hi, my name is Sam H. I'm a graduate student in Systems Science in the Watson School of Engineering at Binghamton University, and I really enjoying teaching.

Before I got my first Teaching Assistant job this semester for the undergraduate course Probability and Statistics 1, I had informally tutored math on and off throughout my scholastic career, working in one-on-one and small group settings to help classmates, friends and family members. I've often found, both as a student and a teacher, that facing math problems you simply don't understand can be quite intimidating and discouraging, leading many to a mindset of "I just don't have a math-brain" or "I'm just not smart enough." I've butted heads with these sorts of feelings many times as a student over the years, and when I've encountered others struggling with material I'm familiar with, I've always been drawn in and energized by the challenge of demystifying it in ways that suite their backgrounds. I've always found this process to be extremely gratifying, and having done more of it than even this semester as a TA, I can say that I would welcome the opportunity to continue doing so over the summer.

Most of this carries over to teaching sports as well. Since my mid teens I've coached in one-on-one and small group settings, and always been enthused by the challenge of building better habits and basic mechanics in ways that I think will best fit students' skills and backgrounds. Though most of my experience is in teaching baseball, which I played competitively all through my teens, I've also spent a lot of time playing and informally teaching tennis, ping pong and softball. Just as with math, I've always been drawn in by the challenge of helping people improve in the clearest and simplest possible ways.

Though my undergraduate work was in liberal arts, I've been a graduate student in the Watson School of Engineering since 2012, which has called for an understanding of many of the math subjects I list as areas of expertise. The remaining subjects are ones I've been familiar with since high school, namely prealgebra, algebra 1 and 2, geometry, trig, precalc and SAT math. I haven't always known that I wanted to pursue a math-related career, but I have always enjoyed doing and teaching math.

I very much enjoy, and am told that I do a good job of breaking down problems into their simplest pieces, making sure students understand each and then guiding them to put them back together to get to the answer. I think establishing the big picture in this way is critical to building the deepest intuition for and thus retention of the material.

As a relative newcomer to programming myself, I've come to greatly appreciate simple and clear instructions in building programs. Before I begin to code anything I always write out a big picture flowchart of what the program will be doing in what order and how. Just as with math I think that the deepest learning happens when students begin at the very beginning. Though there are many pre-built libraries available within Python, I think that it is worth taking the time to build everything from scratch.

I've enjoyed both playing and coaching a number of sports consistently since I was a young child, namely baseball, softball, ping pong and tennis. My most extensive experience is in baseball, which I played competitively throughout my teens and into my early twenties, though I've been playing softball, ping pong and tennis for just as long. When it comes to baseball and softball I have experience with all positions except for pitching in softball.

Thank you very much for looking at my profile and considering me as a tutor. I have a flexible schedule and am very approachable, please feel free to contact me any time! I look forward to it,
-- Sam

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
