About Dustin

My job as a test prep tutor is to teach the necessary concepts and practices that will help my students fully understand the exam. As a tutor with over four years of experience, I go even further by helping my students overcome their fear of failure and providing positive feedback to improve their self-confidence and perpetuate self-motivation.

When it comes to standardized tests, each problem can be daunting. The language can seem confusing and putting pencil to paper can feel overwhelming. With Math, helping my students to learn the art of translating the problem into expressions and equations that can be solved is my main focus. Along with Translation, I teach my students the Basic Math Curriculum in Arithmetic, Algebra, and Geometry along with the Problem Solving Skills that will help students get to the answer. In Verbal, I teach students Reading Strategies that help them fully understanding passages quickly and efficiently. Methods of Pinpointing Keywords and Indicators that connect the questions to the passage is also a focus on my teaching. This along with my Vocabulary Regimens has helped students become much more comfortable going into the test.

I am always looking to teach and encourage students. Each student comes with his or her own story and I'm here to help guide them. I act as a mentor to my students and hope to aid students in achieving long-term academic success.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I am most proficient at teaching Math. With Algebra 1, I generate easy explanations to difficult concepts and give valuable relevant practice work that allows students to grow confident in their own abilities.

College Counseling

After graduating from college in 2012, I worked at an international education consulting group where I personally counseled 10 collegebound seniors and proofread 50 personal statements each year. After two years, I have now become a college counselor at a Philadelphia public school and am in charge of 64 seniors and aid them in achieving postsecondary success. Throughout my career, I have helped students get into schools like NYU, Columbia, UPenn, Stanford, and Cornell.

ESL/ESOL

I have assisted the Eastern Language Department at UPenn as a language speaking partner to multiple international students attending UPenn. I then went on to tutor international high school students and also conducted TOEFL classes for these students. I am currently working as a high school counselor.

GMAT

I have a cumulative GMAT score that is 710/800 (92 percentile) right out of college. I have since then improved my own abilities as a test prep tutor and prepare students by targeting misconceptions or holes in their understanding of math concepts while providing targeted practice to improve their verbal score. My students also improve their scores through my highly regimented study schedule and my motivational coaching, and as the test approaches, I transition from a more conceptual approach to a focus on troubleshooting specific types of problems.

GRE

I have a Verbal Reasoning score of 162 and a Quantitative Reasoning score of 166 with which I was accepted to Harvard GSE. I utilize concepts and strategies learned as an SAT instructor and apply these techniques to the GRE. I also create an intense vocabulary memorization regiment and fine tune each lesson to pinpoint weaknesses and teach the curriculum needed to overcome these weaknesses. Students from the 30th percentile to the 90th percentile have come to me for help.

SAT Math

I received an 800 on the Math portion of the SAT and also received an 800 on the Math II SAT Subject Test.

SAT Reading

I received a 780 on the Critical Reading portion of the SATs in high school.

SAT Writing

I received a 700 in the Writing portion of the SATs in high school.

Great Gmat Tutor

Dustin and I met for the first time this week and he helped me identify my weak areas and how I could go about improving. He's been great in explaining how to think faster and solve problems intuitively.
