Hi there! My name is Marjorie, and I've been tutoring on and off since high school, which was about nine years ago. I spent the summer of my junior year teaching TOEFL classes to international high school students. The subject I tutor the most is English, but I've tutored Spanish and Mandarin Chinese as well. I have a TESOL certificate from my days as a graduate student. I've been an oral English teacher in China and tutored Taiwanese students. I've also tutored adults Spanish, and middle school age children Chinese. I have experience teaching all kinds of people from all kinds of backgrounds in all kinds of English: conversational, test prep, you name it.
I also have two years of writing experience and have been published in a wide variety of outlets. I would be more than happy to help with grammar, editing, proofreading and drafting. If you need help at any part of the process from getting started from wading through the red ink your teacher gave you or putting some finishing touches, then I'm your girl.
I'm fluent in English, Mandarin Chinese, proficient in Spanish with working knowledge of French. If you're stumped on beginning or intermediate Spanish, can't remember tricky grammar rules in English, or need help with all levels of Chinese, get in touch.
I have TESOL certification and a wide variety of teaching experience, from Chinese and Taiwanese college students to Russian and Kazakh high school students to American middle schoolers and adults. I've become a very patient tutor as a result.
I did well in World History in high school in college, and history and political science are hobbies of mine. I'd be more than happy to explain the French Revolution, the first and second World Wars, and the rise of fascism and communism. I can also help out with essays, too!
School is hard, but learning doesn't have to be. Got a paper you're tearing your hair out over? Need to bone up your English skills? Need some help before a big history exam? I'm here to help. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I studied Mandarin Chinese for four years in high school, and for four years in college. I have experience tutoring Chinese to middle school students. I lived in Taiwan for a year during my junior year of college and I lived in China for ten weeks last year.
