About Rick

People tend to think that writing is akin to some form of magic, but I've come to find it's more science than art. It's a craft that takes practice, skill, and technique, all which can be learned under the guidance of a capable instructor.

My name's Rick and I am currently an architecture student at the Cooper Union. I'm originally from Los Angeles and spent the last four years as a tutor for English, SAT/ACT, German, and Art. I tutored high schoolers at both private and public schools, and I've helped students raise GPAs, bolster SAT/ACT scores by up to 400 points, and learn to craft A papers. I'm also experienced with the college admissions process, and I have helped aspiring scholars develop compelling college essays as well as strong portfolios for art schools. In order to stay in practice with the ever-changing test taking and college evaluation process, I like to regularly take timed practice AP English, AP Literature, and SAT/ACT English tests to better aid my students. I am also the most recommended tutor by nationally renowned college counselor Anne Cochran (2012 "Yale Educator" recipient and 2012 Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation's "Educator of Distinction recipient).

My goal as a tutor is to understand a student's specific learning styles and thought processes and subsequently cater my teaching style to fit that student's needs. For example, I've tutored high schoolers with a range of learning disabilities, including dyslexia, ADD/ADHD, and Asperger's syndrome. Finally, I have also worked with students in reading and writing German, as I was raised in a German household and am fluent in the language, completing both the AP German test with a 5 as well as the B1 and C1 tests.

My students have been accepted to institutions such as UCLA, UC Berkeley, Cooper Union, Jons Hopkins, NYU, Dartmouth, Brown, Stanford, MICA, SAIC, and RISD.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
