Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

I am qualified to teach basic drawing skills because I have had many years of coursework in drawing at Brooklyn College, Teachers College-Columbia (Art) and classes at the Art Students League.

I have taught drawing and perspective for many years. As an Associate Director at Columbia University, I recruited students for their Fine Arts program. Later, as a Director of Admissions to the Kansas City Art Institute, I reviewed and advised hundreds of students applying for Drawing and Art programs.

Lastly, I continue to draw and paint, primarily using new technology.

Painting

Painting is my primary form of artistic expression. I am particularly fascinated with landscapes, abstract art and impressionism. On the other hand, as an art dealer I have worked with Pop Art (Warhol and Basquiat) and most recently conceptial artists such as Anish Kapoor, Damien Hirst and Jeff Koons.

I studied painting with the figurative master Phillip Pearlstein and the mixed media master Lucas Semaris. I am well versed as an oil painter and have also worked with acrylics. I understand the science behind color, overlay, use of mixed media material and the archival nature of the media and mediums used and their sequential use.

Mostly, I try to open the student's eye to seeing and interpreting, particularly through landscapes. They have to paint what is seen and what is not seen, through nuance. When the art student understands that, art becomes a language, just like learning the alphabet or numbers. Through these experiences they become open to creativity. Once you acquire the tools and the foundation you can unleash the creativity.
