About Jessica

Hello Families! I have always believed that “in order to teach children effectively, it's critical to reach them as individuals first". Every person is different, and students learn in different ways. I work tirelessly to find the approach that best suits my student’s learning styles and needs. I am a very warm, fun, patient and supportive educator.

And now a little bit about me…my name is Jessica. I am a native New Yorker, and received my BA in English Literature from Wheaton College. Upon graduation, I was accepted to the prestigious NYC Teaching Fellows Program. I received my Masters in teaching English literature at Hunter College; and I have taken numerous additional classes in assessment, behavior management, study skills and organization, differentiation of instruction, Literacy and working with children with Learning Disabilities. I have taught middle school and high school English for five years. I have also worked privately with students of all ages and abilities and feel very comfortable working with different age ranges.

My philosophy is to connect with my students and get to know them as individuals in addition to learning about their strengths and weaknesses as students. My students have always commented on how safe and accepted they feel in my class. As the sister of an Autistic young man, I have a heightened sensitivity to the needs of others and the importance of ensuring them that we all learn from our mistakes. My goal is to empower my students with as much knowledge about their learning styles and organizational skills so they can build self-esteem and confidence in themselves

Looking forward to meeting you,

Jessica

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I am an experienced and certified Middle/ High School English Teacher. I have a BA in English literature and Film studies and an MA in English Literature and Education.

Grammar

I am a very experienced grammar teacher. I teach grammar in numerous ways, depending on the student's learning style, to ensure that the student can understand and use grammar correctly.

Literature

As former MS/HS English teacher and a life long lover of literature, I am very familiar with numerous texts and plays taught in today's schools.

I have developed fun, effective and engaging lessons to teach a multitude of literary concepts/ stories. Whether I'm teaching literary elements through music/ lyrics, or teaching characterization using acting and film, my students always walk away with a clear and positive understanding of the literary concept and its pivotal role in the development of a story.
