I am an experienced academic coach with a Masters degree in education from Teacher's College, Columbia University. Although my training specializes in secondary education (middle school and high school), I have worked with students in virtually all capacities and subjects. My teaching philosophy is that all students can learn and make advancements given the proper guidance and support. I have a very holistic view of education and believe that improvement often requires looking beyond just studying for test or completing homework. In the past, I have worked with families in a long-term capacity taking on a mentoring role in addition to tutoring. This may or may not be the natural progression of the relationship I form with a student and family
My strengths rest in Social Studies (all types of history, political science, philosophy and other social sciences), writing (all types, but especially research essays and papers that require argument formation), and literary analysis. However, as a general academic coach I have the capacity to help students improve in virtually any subject (I have worked with students on foreign language and Biology, for example, and even college/graduate students) by improving study skills (including meta-cognition), accountability and confidence.
I find it extremely rewarding to help individuals of all ages succeed. I'd love to hear from you to determine if I might be the right person to help you or your child.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My undergraduate major was political science. I was on the executive board of my university's model united nations team, during which we won first place at every conference attended. I have taken graduate course in political science at the City University of New York Graduate Center.
As a member of the executive committee of my undergraduate university's Model United Nations, I would coach team members on speech writing and public speaking. As the previous director of development for a private foundation, I have given speeches at events of up to 500 people in front of famous athletes and celebrities. It is something I love to do and think my passion for public speaking will be able to help students learn this important skill.
I hold a Master's of Education in Social Studies Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. During my seven years as a tutor and academic coach, I have worked with students to prepare for many types of Regents exams. Many of these students I worked with for years, which I think attests to my ability to help them achieve their goals.
A great deal of my studies during my undergraduate career focused on the middle east and religious tensions. I applied for a Fulbright scholarship to study peace education in the middle east, for which a great understanding of the region's religions was needed. This background gives me an in depth understanding of the world's three major religions- Christianity, Islam and Judaism. My Masters in Social Studies from Teachers College prepared me to teach any related field within the social sciences. If taken purely from an educational viewpoint, rather than dogmatic, I am qualified to teach about various religious philosophies around the globe.
I have seven years of tutoring experience that focused on general study skills, and critical and analytical thinking. In this regard, I have been able to tutor students in many subjects outside of my expertise, including Portuguese and Biology. I remain a life-long learner myself, which continuously makes me aware of meta-cognitive processes needed to be successful at studying. My Masters program at Teachers College, Columbia University, also had a heavy focus in the importance of teaching meta-cognition.
Beyond my MA in social studies, I have also have taken doctoral level classes in International Relations.
