I am a current senior at Columbia University with a double major in sociology and German. I am a great fit to be your tutor because of my proven academic excellence, educational background, and passion for working with youth to help them realize their full potential.

Since high school I have accumulated extensive experience tutoring subjects including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and writing. I obtain immense satisfaction from making an impact on a student's intellectual development. The one-on-one teacher-pupil relationship afforded by tutoring makes teaching truly rewarding, because I can tailor my content and approaches to students’ needs, and accurately assess their strengths and weaknesses. After matriculating to Columbia, I learned about Wyzant and used the platform to find opportunities to tutor math, English, and test prep students in some of the most highly ranked public and private schools in New York City (e.g., Stuyvesant, Columbia Grammar, Bronx Science, Regis, LaGuardia, Calhoun, and Horace Mann). In order to maximize my tutoring experience, I also volunteer my expertise. I devote two hours a week to tutoring at an after-school program for underprivileged kids from the South Bronx and East Harlem. There, most of my experience has been with sixth- and ninth-graders. I also serve as a mentor in the College Bound Mentoring Program, an initiative of Community Impact at Columbia University. This program supports adults with a High School Equivalency degree (GED or TASC) in their application and matriculation to a four-year college or university.

I love tutoring because of the opportunity to work with students of varying ages and faculties, which keeps pedagogy challenging and engaging. I am available on weekdays and weekends through the end of the school year and am willing to travel if necessary. I am most proficient in algebra, geometry, and trigonometry, writing and grammar, and German. Please contact me if you want help. I am someone who understands how important good tutelage is as I have been the recipient of it.

Grammar,

Grammar

The ability to demonstrate accurate knowledge of Standard Written English concretely distinguishes a great thinker, speaker, or writer. As a self-described grammarian, I enjoy exploring—and sharing my enthusiasm for—the many nuances of language: grammar, syntax, usage, mechanics, punctuation, etc. From the canonical parts of speech to sentence diagramming (i.e., identifying/labeling parts of a sentence) to the correct use of an em dash, I provide assistance in traditional (and transformational) grammar. Previously, I have been published in my college's anthology and have edited copy for various publications, a newsletter and magazine, and two school newspapers.

Proofreading

“I was working on the proof of one of my poems all the morning, and took out a comma. In the afternoon I put it back again.” —Oscar Wilde Revision in writing is key—first drafts, the enemy. Whether your text needs merely a grammar check or content development, I provide support during the writing process. And, in turn, I teach you the skills necessary to become a self-sufficient reviser. Previous editing positions include: head copy editor for The Eye, an online magazine; associate copy editor for Columbia Spectator, a university daily; managing editor for The Harbinger, a college biweekly.

Many people struggle with mathematics, but numeracy need not be an unlearnable skill. In Algebra 1, X marks the spot, but with all its signs, symbols, and substitutions, it can leave pupils bored and confused. As an instructor, I develop tutoring resources, monitor student progress, identify areas needing improvement, help with homework and prepare students for tests, all while trying to reiterate the intrinsic value in practical concepts.

I received high scores in geometry, which I took a year early. It is literally my favorite math—not only because geometric proofs and shapes are fun, but I see it as the most easily applicable math type.

Makes learning fun!

Sean helped my 13-year-old son with math. We are so pleased and excited that he is finally getting it. As my son said, "How did he make math so cool?" and "the way he explained it was insane!" If we could give him 10 stars we would. Definitely look forward to the next few lessons with my son. I definitely will be asking him to help me with mine. A+++

Excellent tutor

Sean was great with helping me construct a argument for my essay. I highly recommend him! He was available to talk on the phone and gave me feedback over email when I wasn't able to meet in person.

Very helpful

Sean is helping me get ready for the math portion of the GRE. I am confident that i should do well on the test with the tutoring he is giving me. I plan to continue with Sean as my tutor until it comes time to take the course.

Great tutor!

The lesson with Sean was very helpful. As an international student, I have some difficulties with grammar and spelling, and Sean helped me in these two fields. Sean helped me in editing my papers and taught me useful skills for my future writing assignments. I truly recommend this excellent teacher, especially for international students.

Look no further! Ivy League Standards!

As a student in Creative Writing at Columbia University in the City of New York, I am surrounded by quality resources and highly effective writing tutors. Of these, Sean struck me, from his first comments regarding diction, as an excellent option when I need assistance and his flexibility allowed for us to meet on short notice, making him the perfect choice for an urgent assignment. He respectfully guided me to a greater understanding of how a reader will perceive my structures and educated me on the subtle nuances that turn great writing into truly exceptional writing. He was courteous and mindful of my personal style in all of our interactions and seeks to partner with, rather than control, those he helps. I recommend him as a superior editor in the Northeast for anything writing-related.
