About Deborah

With a background in writing, editing, performing, and teaching, I engage with each of my students based on their individual needs, whether it is improving their conversational English, reading, writing, or all of the above. I can also help with composition and editing essays, and schoolwork for children and adults who want to improve their grades. Scoring in the 99th percentile in the GRE verbal section, I can help you prepare for the written and verbal sections of standardized tests. I began my teaching and tutoring career over a decade ago, teaching English and Music to students at daycares and conservatories. I also provided tutoring and editing services for both native English speakers and foreign students, helping them brush up their essays and improve their reading, writing and speaking skills.

As a native English speaker with working knowledge of French and basic Hebrew, I can also help smooth the transition to the US for French and Hebrew speakers with very little background in English. I am also well versed in the differences between American and UK English. I hold a BA in English Literature from Concordia University, Montreal, and an MA in Middle East Studies. I am a published author and songwriter, have edited front cover pieces for the New York Times magazine and other leading publications, and have a secret love of sci-fi. I am currently an editor for a science-fiction and fantasy magazine where I enjoy helping writers hone their creative writing skills. I am comfortable working with children and adults, and love to learn about my students' backgrounds and hear their stories while teaching them English, which becomes as much a learning experience for me as it does for them.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
