About Jason

Hello, my name is Jason M and I am a medical physics graduate student at Columbia University. In May of 2014, I graduated summa cum laude (3.904 GPA overall) with a B.S. in Physics from East Stroudsburg University. I have over 6 years of pertinent experience tutoring high school and undergraduate college students in an array of quantitatively challenging fields (4 in high school as an algebra, trigonometry and pre-calculus tutor working for my honors pre-calculus teacher and 2 in college as a part-time tutor employed by the Physics Department at East Stroudsburg University).

My experience serving as both a classroom assistant for an introductory physics course as well as a tutor for the Physics Department at East Stroudsburg University, has endowed me with an inordinate amount of passion for helping students learn, appreciate, and most significantly, enjoy math and science. For the better part of two years, I tutored undergraduate students at ESU in physics, chemistry, geometry, statistics, linear algebra, and last but not least (although perhaps infinitesimally small in limiting cases), calculus. In addition to holding regularly scheduled hours in our department's tutoring center, I often met students for personalized instruction by appointment at virtually all hours of the day.

Congruently, in my aforementioned role as a classroom assistant for an introductory physics course (Physics 117: Energy – fall of 2013), I was afforded the relatively rare opportunity (at least for an undergraduate at ESU) to serve as an alternate instructor/tutor for the course. I functioned as the primary conduit of communication between the professor who taught the class and its rather abundant number of students. When the instructor was busy answering a question at the front of the room, I was there to answer questions in the back.

Essentially, the overwhelming sense of achievement that I have derived from my numerous tutoring endeavors has emboldened my sincere enthusiasm for promoting and fostering intellectual curiosity for math and science at the university level. I love math and I love physics, but most of all, I love people. The confluence of those three passions has transformed me into a skilled, shrewd, and devoted tutor.

Note: I specialize in helping students improve their scores on the SAT and GRE mathematics sections. I have helped two different students achieve a perfect score of 800 on BOTH the regular SAT mathematics section as well as the SAT 2 Mathematics subject test.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in physics (3.904 overall GPA) from East Stroudsburg University. Over the course of my educational endeavors, I have achieved a final grade of A in each and every one of my mathematics courses (ranging from my honors algebra 1 course in high school to my differential equations, linear algebra, and advanced mathematical physics courses in college).

Furthermore, I have over 6 years of pertinent experience (4 in high school working for my honors pre-calculus teacher and 2 in college employed by the Physics Department at East Stroudsburg University) tutoring students in algebra, geometry, pre-calculus, calculus, linear algebra, statistics, chemistry, and physics.

Algebra 2

Calculus

Perhaps most noteworthy, I have successfully helped students master the fundamentals of differentiation, integration (including integration by substitution, integration by trig substitution, and integration by parts), limits, vector calculus, and differential equations.

Differential Equations

I have over 6 years of relevant experience (4 in high school working for my honors pre-calculus teacher and 2 in college employed by the Physics Department at East Stroudsburg University) tutoring students in algebra, geometry, pre-calculus, calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, statistics, chemistry, and physics.

Perhaps most noteworthy, I have successfully helped students learn to solve linear, 1st order differential equations, 2nd order, homogeneous differential equations, and 2nd order, non-homogeneous differential equations utilizing methods such as: The separation of variables, Bernouli's principle, the method of undetermined coefficients, the method of variation of parameters, the employment of laplace transforms, and the implementation of the characteristic equation. I have also assisted students in mastering the comprehension and utilization of both eigenvalues and eigenvectors in order to successfully solve systems of differential equations.

Geometry

Perhaps most noteworthy, I have successfully helped students master the fundamentals of parallel lines, the calculation of areas, perimeters, and volumes germane to triangles, circles, and various parallelograms, angles in degrees and radians, polygons, symmetry in reflection, rotation, and translation, the unit circle, parabolas, the classifications and definitions of triangles, and much, much more.

GRE

Perhaps most noteworthy, I achieved a math score of 161 and a verbal score of 163 on the computer-based, Revised GRE.

Correspondingly, I have helped numerous students raise their scores significantly on both the math and verbal sections of the Revised GRE.

Physics

Perhaps most noteworthy, I have successfully helped students master the fundamentals of classical Newtonian mechanics (including 2D and 3D kinematics, Newton's three laws of motion, the conservation of energy, the conservation of momentum, fluid statics, friction, circular motion,, and rotational kinematics and dynamics), classical electromagnetic theory (including coulomb's law, Gauss's law, capacitance, conductors, electric field calculations, electric field calculations in dielectrics, electric dipoles, magnetic field calculations, magnetic field calculations in materials, the law of Biot and Savart, Ampere's law, ferromagnetism, paramagnetism, diamagetism, Maxwell's equations, electromagnetic waves, the wave equation, plane waves, and polarization), optics, thermodynamics (the application of the three basic laws), ideal gases, statistical mechanics, atomic physics, and introductory quantum mechanics (including the application of the schrodinger equation to simple systems such as a particle in a box, the infinite square well, the finite square well, and the hydrogen atom).

Prealgebra

I have helped students master the fundamentals of pre-algebra including: Absolute value, Cartesian coordinates, the associative, cumulative, and distributive properties, factorials, fractions, integers, equations of lines and polynomials, and rational/irrational numbers.

Precalculus

I have helped students master the fundamentals of conic sections, exponents, logarithms, functions, inverse functions, vectors, complex numbers, imaginary numbers, parametric equations, polar coordinates, spherical coordinates, and trigonometric functions.

SAT Math

I have helped two different students achieve a perfect score of 800 on BOTH the regular SAT mathematics section as well as the SAT 2 Math subject test.
