About Garrett

Hello, my name is Garrett, and I live in Harlem. I take much joy and fulfillment in helping students realize the potential of the English language and the potential of their own abilities.

I attended Emory University in Atlanta on full academic scholarship and graduated with a double major in Creative Writing and Music. I then received the Bobby Jones Scholarship for a fully-funded year of study at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. After completing my year there, I received the prestigious, nationally-competitive Marshall Scholarship (www.marshallscholarship.org) for two years of graduate school in the UK. On the Marshall, I received two masters degrees, one in Theater & Performance and one in Music Theater. I also am a recipient of the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship.

If you need help in any capacity with English homework, the writing of essays or applying for college/scholarships, I am here to help. I sat on the Emory Scholars selection committee and reviewed applications of incoming students. I have also led numerous theater workshops and creative writing sessions and love to work one-on-one with students. I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Basketball

I played four years of varsity basketball in high school. I was also signed to play at Emory University for undergrad.

College Counseling

I have extensive experience on both sides of the college admissions process, and I know what it takes to find the right fit and put together a stand out application. I resided on the scholarship selection committee for incoming freshmen at Emory University for which I read essays, interviewed incoming freshmen, and voted to award them either full tuition or full scholarships. I was also a part of the Deans Achievement Scholarship selection committee at Emory which awarded scholarships to students in their sophomore and junior years at Emory. In addition to that I attended Emory on full scholarship and went on to receive the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship, the Bobby Jones Scholarship and the Marshall Scholarship. I would take much joy in imparting some of what I have learned to young students in their college search.

English

I have extensive experience in both academic and creative writing. I attended Emory University on full academic scholarship and majored in English/Creative Writing. I love to write poetry and plays, but I also have two masters degrees and have done my fair share of academic writing. After finishing at Emory, I received the Bobby Jones Scholarship and the Marshall Scholarship to study abroad in the UK. I now regularly edit and revise scholarship/college admissions essays of my peers. I also resided on the Emory scholarship selection committee for which I read and evaluated application essays, interviewed the candidates and voted for their awards.
