About Stuart

I am an experienced Math teacher of over 10 years in NYC public schools. Although I have primarily worked in middle schools, I have taught classes of students from 4th through 12th grade. Prior to becoming a full time teacher, I was a teacher/tutor for Princeton Review, preparing students for standardized exams. Though I no longer work for them, I do continue to tutor students for the SAT and SHSAT and every year send students to Stuyvesant, Bx Science and other top high schools. My tutoring students have gone on to attend many top universities in America, including Harvard, Princeton, Cornell, UPenn, Columbia, Brown, Tufts, NYU and many others. My classroom students routinely perform in the highest tiers of state exams, and show marked improvement in ability and confidence. My fee may be steeper than the average tutor on this site, but as you'll see through direct experience, you are paying for years of experience gained from teaching 1000's of students over many years.

I am also an experienced player and coach of volleyball (played for over 20 years; coached for 6) and basketball (played for over 30 years; coached for 2) and can work on a variety of skills to make players stand out from their teammates to get more playing time or to dominate the competition.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have been teaching standardized test prep for years, dating back to my days working for The Princeton Review in 2000. I am well versed in the material that is covered on this exam and also adept at improving student's scores. My goal is your goal: getting you into the college of your dreams.

Algebra 1

I am a certified 7-12 math teacher in the DOE. I have been teaching full time in NYC public schools since 2003. All of my work has been on the middle school level, teaching Algebra and PreAlgebra.

Basketball

I have played basketball since I was about 5 in many different venues, from recreational leagues to basketball camps to organized school teams. Over the last few school years, I have coached the middle school girl's team. I have a wide range of skills, techniques and insights that I can provide any player looking to develop their game.

College Counseling

Because of my aforementioned experience as an SAT tutor, it has been in my best interests to learn the most out of the college admissions process. Whether this is learning about different types of colleges or what they are looking for in potential candidates, I bring an objective viewpoint that can help students put themselves in the best position to get into the school of their choice. I have facilitated research on colleges and helped students develop their own criterion about their college preferences. Further, given my majors in college and my experiences as a teacher and tutor, I am an excellent resource for evaluating and helping students to revise their college essays.

Elementary Math

I am a fully certified math teacher and have been working in NYC public schools since 2003. Though I have taught as a 6th grade teacher during most of this time, I have taken it upon myself to develop an expertise with elementary school math as well because I know exactly what skills and content knowledge is crucial for success in middle school.

GRE

Dating back to 2000, when I worked for The Princeton Review, I have tutored and taught good test taking procedures as well as specific content for standardized exams. I am proficient at many exams and look forward to bringing out the best results in all my students.

Relevant scores: GRE 2230 (Math 800, Analytical 790, Verbal 640); SAT (Math 800, Verbal 760); SAT II Writing (740) [in the last decade, these have been all one exam]

Prealgebra

I help students to develop good habits in math, by stressing complete work and an awareness of WHY every step is essential. My students not only get better grades, but also experience confidence boosts that lasts for years.

PSAT

Dating back to 2000, when I worked for The Princeton Review, I have tutored and taught good test taking procedures as well as specific content for standardized exams. I am proficient at many exams and look forward to bringing out the best results in all my students.

SAT Reading

Dating back to 2000, when I worked for The Princeton Review, I have tutored and taught good test taking procedures as well as specific content for standardized exams.

I have since tutored the SAT for dozens of students and made them better applicants for the college of their choice. I have an extensive vocabulary and place a strong emphasis on the roots of words. This carries over into the Writing portion and even the Math portion.

SAT Writing

Dating back to 2000, when I worked for The Princeton Review, I have tutored and taught good test taking procedures as well as specific content for standardized exams.
In college, I was a dual major and ended up writing over 200 pages of papers before graduating. I still advise students on college essay writing. I am sure I can help you improve your score and your college essay as well.

Volleyball

I have played volleyball for close to 20 years, and excelled in many positions on the court. Most recently, I have played as a setter for the adult leagues that I play in; this position requires a player to be very knowledgeable about the game in order to best put their teammates in a position to succeed. For the last 5 years or so, I have coached volleyball at 3 different schools, starting first as an assistant coach and now as a head coach. I am well versed in proper form, techniques and strategy in order to get the best from any player.

Excellent Teacher — I spent a lot of time looking for a tutor that could take math to another level for my daughter and it was hard to find someone who could go beyond computational math. Stuart is a true mathematician and delights in the world of problem solving. The work is more challenging and creative and he is totally versed at teaching this more difficult material. He understands all the nuances of teaching ...
