About Dwight

If you want to have fun while learning English as a second language or for test preparation, then choose a tutor with seven years of experience who is patient and passionate about making learning fun and active.

I specialize in helping students do two things:

1) improve their English with intensive functional language so that they can be more confident in their day to day lives, or
2) get the score they want on exams like the SAT reading and writing sections, SAT II Subject Test in English, and the GRE and the TOEFL exams.

After being an SAT tutor for 8 years, I have helped dozens of students to improve their SAT reading and/or writing score by over 200 points.

I believe in an active learning style where students get to fully engage the material and have fun learning tools, tips and test-taking strategies that can immediately improve their performance and their knowledge.

I have years of professional experience in college admissions and can help prospective applicants to understand the process from the other side of the table. And I also CELTA certified, which means I have earned an internationally recognized credential in English language teaching from Cambridge University.

And I’m not just a language tutor, but also a language learner myself who speaks a high intermediate level of Spanish and a basic level of Mandarin Chinese. In fact, I have also earned a Certificate in Modern China Studies.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

I work in college admissions in my day job and have been advising students in New York City high schools for over 5 years about the entrance requirements and academic programs available at my employer. In that role, I am a member of both the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) and New York State's Association for College Admission Counseling (NYSACAC). As a member I attend conferences and workshops regularly and participate in a variety of discussions about the latest topics in the field. Finally, I am a candidate for a Masters in Higher Education, which I am completing to further my career.

IELTS

I'm a native English speaker and I have been doing exam prep for non-native English speakers for 8 years. I am also CELTA certified, which means I have earned an internationally recognized credential in English language teaching from Cambridge University. Cambridge University administers the IELTS, and several of the instructional/pedogogical strategies they teach in the CELTA certification are based on the performance of students on the IELTS before and after instruction. In summary, the institution which makes the IELTS also trained me how to teach English so that students will perform better on tests like the IELTS.

Public Speaking

Apart from serving as the captain of the debate team in high school, I served as the student government president of my college, and took many business classes which required group presentations to pass.

Further, I work in communications for a university by day and train college recruiters to make excellent presentations.

Please let me know if you would like more information, I look forward to helping others with this vital skill.

Excellent Tutor, The best — I'm in an intermediate or advanced level of English. I was looking for a mentor to show me the right direction of studying; I feel that my English hasn’t grown for a long time. Dwight is a great teacher to help my English improve. I like his teaching methods. - He kept asking me many questions. I think it was a very good way to enhance my speaking ability. I can find my weakness at the same time. ...
